Pennsylvania Tom Down!

Postby Indian Summer » 05 10, 2014 •  [Post 1]

It's been a rough few weeks working 65 to 70 hours. So rough that for the first time since the 80s when I began hunting turkeys I missed the opener. Could NOT get out of bed. Missed the entire first week. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do it again next Saturday and weekdays are out so I went the extra mile and drove a ways to a favorite spot.

Got there to find out the woman who owns the place ran a trespasser off just before I showed up. Hiked up the hill at 8:30. Sleeping in the grass on the field edge by 9. At 9:30 or so I decided to walk over to an adjacent field where I've done well. Before I even got to the field I saw this guy fanned out skylined on the highest hump. Barked at him once on the Lohman 870 box call and he strutted right over to 40 yards. Man life has been rough the past few weeks which is why you haven't seen me around here much lately. Thanks to the man upstairs I was done and home before the rain moved in. Out cold on the couch by 10:45. This makes 30 years straight without getting skunked. :D Pretty happy about that. 9 1/2 inch beard, 7/8 inch spurs. Washington county Pa. has some of the best eastern turkey hunting you could ask for.

Had a friend from Wyoming guiding in northern Nebraska last week had clients kill 4 toms by 11 am one day. It's a different world out there. Our easterns, like the deer, have PHDs in human behavior. Those Merriam's are dumber than rocks and there are thousands of them.

By the way.... another self taken pic with the Clip-Shot. I love that thing!

Congratulations Joe on a fine tom. I hunt the eastern turkeys in Arkansas and Missouri both. I killed one bird in Arkansas and two birds in Missouri this year. One of the birds in Missouri was a triple beard. This is the second one I have taken in Missouri. Look forward to seeing more pictures of your birds in the future.

PS: If I can ever figure out how to post pictures I will send you some of the birds I have killed. Again congratulations.
