New Rifle

Postby Swede » 04 04, 2019 •  [Post 1]

I hardly need a new rifle, but every once in a while I just have to do it. A neighbor had this old Sako L579 Forester Deluxe 243. He told me he took it to Cabelas to see what they would give him for it, but he wasn't satisfied. I asked what he wanted. After a very short discussion I told him I would buy it from him for his asking price. The price was still very good, especially since it has a new Weatherby 2 1/2-10 power scope on it. To my real surprise it is an early 1960s Forester. It had been in a collector's possession for many years until he had passed away. It has never been fired since it was first purchased and everything about the gun and scope says "brand new".
Now I have dilemma. Should I take the gun out hunting or keep it in mint condition? This is a very fancy piece.

Take it hunting, just dont bang it around, take care of it. But its been waiting 50 or so years to do what it was made for. Let it out to play.

I think it would like to go out and play with the kitties. Do you have any cats that would enjoy a 243?

Sounds like a nice rifle. I have no expertise so I don't have much of a suggestion for you and have no idea what it is worth. In my opinion, any well-made rifle can hunt. If yours is collectible and potentially worth a lot of money, you might be better off getting a beater for hunting. That is unless you get a certain joy from hunting with a collectible rifle. I would also say it depends on value. I have seen some of those old double barrell Parker Bros shotguns that sell for $50,000. I would never hunt with something like that. If it is worth $1500, then that is way less risky.

I have a $2,000 shotgun (new and not collectible) that I have beaten the absolute crap out of while hunting grouse. It may be worth $300 to $400 now. Last, I bought a Browning X-bolt with a walnut stock and a stainless barrel. I think it cost around $1200. The thing is so pretty that I have not been able to bring myself to hunt with it yet. I almost wish I got the laminated stock. Logic sometimes doesn't apply very well.

Notice the unique inlay in the pistol grip cap. I understand it came from the factory that way, but all I have seen before had a tree shaped inlay instead of a diamond.
