Boot Laces

Postby Swede » 08 07, 2019 •  [Post 1]

Have you ever considered how much of your hunt depends on some inconspicuous item like your boot lases? Sure you can tie them together after they break, but often they break again because they are worn out. I went out one time and had a boot sole almost totally come detached from the upper. My hunt for that day was over. Fortunately I was hunting from home and could return and go out the next morning with my work boots.
The point of this is to get you to think about all of your prep and packing for your upcoming hunt. Are you really ready and have you checked out everything carefully so some seemingly insignificant item does not fail and shorten your hunt. There are many such items like rain gear or camp stove that can fail. Look things over real carefully as you pack.

BTW: What if anything has broken, been lost, or have you forgotten that shortened your hunt?

Just another good reason to have some para cord and duck tape in your pack for repairs like that.

Never had one break, but I've considered the implications should it happen. I carry a bunch of paracord in my pack for multi purpose cordage. This would be one of the purposes. As WW said, tape is good have on hand too for the boot sole potential. I keep a roll of e-tape in my pack for all kinds of stuff (used it more for first aid than anything unfortunately :o ). That stuff sure comes in handy. If you're backpack hunting, those two items can save your bacon is a myriad of circumstances.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

I blew out the side of High tech boots on the way out from a hunt
That Monday I had new Danners

My daughter bought me some under armor hunting boots with her discount
The first hunt the new boot lace broke
Under armor had new laces to me before the next hunt

Next hunt; new laces , the heel separated
, new boots by Friday’s hunt

Then
First time putting those boots on the pull loop area the stitching completely was missed
I was mad $160 boots , another fail
Under armor set me a new pair of boots again
I’ve been very Leary of those boots and while UA stood behind them I’ll haven’t bought UA products since

I’ve had two Redfirkd scopes fail
And my rangefinder need a reset and shot high on a small bull

That was a blessing in disguise
I was alone, way in, 1000 feet up then 600 elevation down
And a great close interaction with bulls

Before I go out I try to make sure all gear is in good order
I quit hunting with a few people because they use junk gear
When I was a contractor and trapper
All sorts of maintenance and gear check from my truck on down was i good order

No matter the hunt
I’m not going to break down when I’m miles from help plus wreak a hunt
When I hunted the desert I kept a cache of water, shade and spare tires
Most of my life I’ve carried at least 2 spares I’ve been out three times in my life where I’ve blown 2 tires

Swede I hate broken and poor quality laces
I learned that as a kid and hockey player
In my world: worn , or low quality laces don’t exist
A few months ago I had the cheap laces discussion with my wife
I bought new laces for my Sunday dress shoes. A day later my wife had returned them and bought some at the dollar store. My wife thinking she was being frugal
I had to have my hammer and screwdriver lecture
Her dad has a collection of $2.00 hammers, years back he freaked out that I had bought a new decking hammer for work and replaced a worn framing hammer each costing over $30 ( 1990)
I was framing a deck for him
He was still a part time DDS,He blew out his thumb and couldn’t work all the next week
My point is even low quality gear can work to a point
But I don’t use junk that takes time from the hunt or work
I use to fish a lot I always replaced worn line while guys in the boat were all too often kissing big fish and tackle
