New addition to the archery gear

Postby cnelk » 02 18, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I now am the proud '2nd owner' of a 1969 52" Bear 50# Kodiak Magnum.
My uncle who bought his bow new handed it down to me.
Cant wait to get a new string and get it warmed up!

Nice bow. It reminds me of my first Browning 54#, 60 inch bow. I purchased it in about 1972.

That is a beautiful bow! My brother is a fly fishermen and I often compare the two. Someone who does either well is a beautiful thing to watch. I need to shoot mine more often.

Yessir, gotta agree with Paul...a lil Easton Axis or Beman with a 100 grain brass insert and a 125 grain tip...
Nice bow sir...hope you put it to good use. Unlike Paul, I'm still carrying a recurve into the woods, although on occasion, the compound is fun to carry and shoot. Grouse hate it when I carry a compound...lol

Just make sure when you get a new string that you do not get a fast flight string. As the bow being made in 69 will not be rated for the 0-low stretch strings. It will cause bow failure. I know several people who make some top notch strings and can pass along info if interested.

By the way that is a beautiful bow. I have my go to Longbow, but do shoot a 56" recurve a lot. Got to love the trad bows.

Glenn, great info! I learned something today too! I did not know that about the certain strings, thanks a ton for your insight!

Anthony, I still dabble in the trad gear, you wanna shoot for money! (big grin)

Thanks guys!
Yes - the old bows will not handle the thin new strings as they will cut thru the string grooves unless they are re-enforced.
I put a new B-50 string on it, waxed it up and put a few arrows thru it tonight to get some of the stretch out.
I also ordered a 3R Mini-Boa 4 arrow quiver to compliment the vintage wood.

I'll work thru the arrow selection / weights once the string settles down and start the tuning process.

Bit all I know now is..... WOW!
This thing has some PUNCH!

Along with the bow came 3 ORIGINAL 'Bear' wood arrows.
Still have the Bear emblem on them - 2 are target points and 1 is a fish tip
Also - 3 Bear original 2-blade broadheads....

Nostalgia at its peak!!!

Paul, can I shoot the bow Im shooting for 3D's right now? And how much money we talkin bout? Be careful, I dont have a lot to spend, gotta pay for my Jess Stuart bow soon...
Are you still shooting Ernies Sapphire longbows?
Its always fun to shoot old arrows and broadheads, but I've never been a fan of the bear Razor Head. My dad still has a passel of them, and Judd Cooney gave me a bunch. And in truth, mixing that old bow with carbons would be kinda...well, you know. But a nice set of cedars...now your talking!!

Im not going the cedar route, but a little of both worlds.
Looking at the Goldtip Traditional series arrows.
Got the wood 'look' and the carbon toughness

Wont be using the Bear 2-blase broadheads either. They will be on display somewhere in the mancave
I havent decided on a broadhead yet, depends on tuning

I shoot FMJ's myself, tipped with 100 grain Muzzy Phantoms or Wasp Sharp Shooters. Got decent weight and they fly perfect...

Anthony, I have a dollar, are we good to go! (grin)

Brad, I shot those G/T before as well, they're a good arrow & they do simulate wood pretty good. Have you taken elk with trad gear in the past?

Paul,
I have only taken WT with my 42# Super Grizzly

My goal this year is to take an elk with both my new PSE Drive and my Kodiak Magnum...

It takes a lot of frustrating work to kill elk with a trad bow...the set up has to be perfect, and the shot needs to be good, plus you gotta be feeling the shot. If you need some help, I'll call for you...
I try to kill two bulls every year, one in Co and one in NM...NM is getting tougher to draw tags, but I've got landowner tags in a good unit. And nothing compares to killing a bull with a recurve...now Im going to do it with cedar arrows, and one year soonwith a stone point..

Buglmin- I must disagree with you! Killing a bull with a long bow is tops!(LOL) a recurve is a close second. This year I will be carting my trusted long bow again. But I will be trying to get a couple of guys in my group to kill first. Since they have done a lot of bow hiking and no elk killing, my goal is to have them kill first.

Been there, done that. I used to carry a Thunderhorn Coup Stick, and shot a Bob Lee 3 piece takedown longbow for years, plus I shoot a Morrison Shawnee a lot and carry it often. Love the way the Shawnee shoots for me...

I'll be shooting a 62" reflex deflex long bow this season. If I use good form this bow is spot on!
I switched to three under and have my anchor set at my thumb knuckle under my ear lobe.
This allows me to use back tension for my release and have a full draw.
I'll use 2016/2018 aluminum arrows with a two blade 140 grain Magnus.

Bulmin - sounds like you have a nice little collection there. To me really any trad gear is the only way to go. I tend to use my longbow more as it feels the best to me. I shoot a lot of stuff with my recurves as well.

Wideangle - I shoot a 62 " longbow as well. One nice thing about it is when I am using my binos and standing I use the bow tip as a rest for the binos. i am 6' tall and just need to lean over a touch and is steady and comfortable while standing. Not so good with my 56" recurve. I am shooting 74# on my longbow with my arrows being 710 grains (Both woods and FMJ's). Back tension will allow you to hold longer and have a very clean and consistent release.

Yessir, Im trying...adding a new Jess Stuart bow as soon as its done, and trading my lil Black Widow for a new 3 piece Heart Stopper from Thunderhorn real soon...love them Heart Stoppers. Duane Jessup makes the prettiest bow there is, and the grip is perfect for me.

I have a 52"/50# Kodiak Magnum also. But mine has what looks like a walnut strip that runs right down thru the center of the riser. I don't really like to shoot it. The thing stacks like crazy. Also have an old Damon Howatt Bandito 58"/45# that is a dream to shoot.

The Howatt Bandito was my first recurve. My dad bought it for me in the mid 70's, and yessir, I still have it.

Lou a real character for sure. You can tell him that from Bill over in Craig. Also tell him I said hi and ask him why he hasn't come on the elknut forum. He would be a great addition here. I have known Lou for several years. I used to see him at the bowhunter jamborees several times.
