Build your own homemade stuff?

Postby cnelk » 02 28, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Im sure some of you have built things you use for hunting.

Lets see some of those items

Here is a 'ladder stand' I made from a 1/2 section discarded alum extension ladder.
We drug it out to the woods and set it up [son did the 'sit set']

It works good. I shot two elk from it

I made my bow press and a draw board for tuning. I also make field tip targets for shooting with empty plastic bags shoved into a bag that work great.

I've made several treestands built 2 bows both strong enough for deer one I would try on elk but under 20yds. Built a collapsible duck blind on my boat. Also made a crester for arrows. If I think I can I build anything I can as long as its cheaper than buying.

I have thought about building a bow press.

Is yours for horizontal limbs?

I also make my field tip targets too, I use old 'shrink wrap' stuffed into a feed sack - cost $2

I welded together some steel tree stands with bolt on wood seats. They were made similar to the API hang-on stands. They worked fine and were stable, safe and quiet. They were also rather comfortable. The problem was that, they were also very heavy to pack in then to take up a tree. The last I saw of them, they were hanging in a barn in eastern Oregon.

I took an old gas grill grate and made an adjustable fire grill/grate
Work good for camping trips or hunting camp

I have always loved making my own stuff. I've made more tree stands than I can remember. I made a nice bow sling last year, but I will be redesigning it this year. I sleep in a hammock when I go backpacking, so I made some nice straps for it. I can't believe no one makes a good ste of adjustable hammock straps, so I just came up with my own. Very simple and easy to make, and fully adjustable.

My latest project is an alchohol stove made out of a beer can. It's a complete setup with a wind screen and a soup can for a cook pot. I can boil 16 oz. of water with 2 oz. of alchohol. I will post some pictures of it when I get a chance.

Keep the ideas coming, I am always looking for a new project :D

Cnelk that grill looks good, but something seems to be missing. Hummm?? Let's see. Oh; its the meat. Where are the hambergers, steaks or even the weinies? I guess its too close to dinner time here.

They all nest together and fit into the plastic container. There is also enough room for some matches and a small bottle of fuel.

This is the press. It is a trailer jack with a pair of 2x2 arms welded at 90 degrees with oak fingers attached to them (I tried two different sets of fingers made of metal, but found wood worked better for me). Turn the trailer jack handle to press the bow that is in the fingers.

It works great on parallel limb bows. I've had carbon element, multiple of hoyts, matthews, bowtech, bear, and darton in the press.

I`m gradually building a bow press for parallel limb bows, my current one does my bow fine, but I might want to upgrade someday.
Also built a bow vise that mounts to a bench like the one Apple makes. http://www.lancasterarchery.com/apple-e ... -vise.html

This is a fun thread! I wish I had more to contribute. I'm more of a modifier/customizer than a builder. Much respect for you handy men!

I've made a bunch of alcohol stoves, custom knives, tree stands, and a bow press. And a whole bunch of other stuff I've forgot about over the years.

Very cool stuff above guys!

I made an Elevated Cheek Piece for my new-to-me Elk Rifle (7mm RUM in Rem 700). This is a piece of Cherry from the Farm that I grew up on. Not finished yet, still need to inlay stainless steel digital pieces where I have chiseled out.

I build my own hunting rifles my latest one is a 300 win mag has a shilen barrel, match trigger, extra thick recoil lug, super lite fireing pin custom shroud and extra strength fireing pin spring, custom machined scope bases bedded to action, 8x40 scope screws ,custom stock has been compleatly blue printed and reemed to accept a custom bolt with sako extractor and tactical bolt handle. It would have cost thousands if I paid someone to do all that but custom rifles arent cheap. Unless you build them yourself. Bart
