Gear challenge

Postby cnelk » 03 09, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I been thinking about something for anyone that that may be interested.

How about a gear challenge?

We will pick a date on the calendar, say a weekend.
You have two nights to accomplish the challenge

You set your shelter up in the yard and you will have all of your gear packed in your pack.
And you spend the night.

Even tho you may be just a few feet from your house, the comforts of home are off limits.

Everyone will need to take a couple pics of their setup and submit.

This will give a good test run and we can get everyone's reviews.

Thoughts?

I've been thing about doing this but I'm taking it a step further planning to head out to my hunting grounds here in Mo find the steepest hill I can and setup to simulate the mountains camp for the night load up spend the day hiking around set camp that night in the dark and then pack it up in the dark the next morning hiking out in the dark. Should be a good test run.

Can I just spread out my sleeping bag on the sofa in the trailer, with my daypack in the corner, and call it good? lol

Why not turn on the lawn sprinkler while you are at it and give your system a good check out?

Well, you have to admit it is better to find out if your gear will hold up before you encounter a mountain storm in the middle of the nite.

That's actually a good idea. I always tell people.. if you want to know what you need forget about kiiling an elk for a few minutes and think about your hunt in detail every step of the way. I bet guys who have just started to accumulate gear find several things they didn't think of by morning. Don't forget the TP!

If I did that my wife would think I was following through with my usually idle threats of moving into the back yard. But I'm in. Could be better than marriage counseling.

I do this every year, it is a good check of your systems and the possibility of forgetting something that crapped out that needs to be fixed/replaced. If you have new gear it will help you become familiar with it so there are no surprises in the woods.

Make sure the sprinkler system is off before you do it in your yard. Otherwise, you might have to dig a cat hole in your tent. LOL!

Just checking: Hoping cnelk is getting that "warm fuzzy feeling" now. Be careful as some of the folks who hang out here are cruel.
I checked out the trailer and got out an expension cord. I'm ready for a night of "roughing it". I'll take my sleeping bag and pack with me when I get in. Just waiting on the word to start.

I have a couple wall tents, a couple backpacking tents, one of which is new.
That new one is the one that going to get the test...

Swede, you better check that electrical cord. Just in case a mouse didnt chew on it... :)

How bout the weekend of March, 23? I'll be doing this for three nights anyway at my turkey camp in Nebraska. Not sure I'd want to camp in my backyard, at least not until the snow melts and I can do the spring dog chit removal!

I will be in Nebraska April 11- 14 hunting turkeys too.
It would be a good time to do some gear testing

Anyone want to join in either of these two dates?
