I'm sticking with the trusty Slick Trick 100. Last elk it blew through him at 40 yds and broke a rib on the way out. Put in new blades and used it on my #1 arrow last season. Forty five yard shot and killed another...tree. Damn!!!

Great question as I have no idea. Been shooting G5 Strikers and haven't been impressed with the blood trail in deer so looking for suggestions from this site for what I want to use for elk. From what I hear Slick Trick seems to be a good option. I have shot the VPA Terminator in 100 grain and I can't get them to fly very well with my set up, for whatever reason. I'm keeping an eye on this thread for some options.

Shot Bear Razorheads for years but they are getting hard to find now days. So I switched over to 125 gr. 4 blade Magnus Stingers. Great head. Easy to sharpen, tough as nails, flies like a field point, and has a lifetime guarantee.

next up..turkey. Slick trick magnum 100's and grim reapers.

most likely the grim reapers because i have a bunch of slightly underspined arrows i dont mind shooting and losing into the tall grass.

September will be my first ever elk hunt but I will stick with my trusty Muzzy 125gr. 3 blades. My only other choice would be the tried and proven 125gr. Thunderheads. I used the Thunderheads since they first came on the marked and switched to the Muzzy about 7 years ago only because I found a dozen for cheap on the clearance isle one day. I gave my Thunderheads to my son when he started bow hunting around that time.

Thinking about goin with the Slick Trick, unsure of what model. I currently use Rage expandable and have had great success with this broad head. I know some will debate the expandable. And I will agree that it adds for something else going wrong, but so far I have not had a bad experience with it. They fly true, and the damage that is done is amazing. The newer design holds the blades better than the previous design, So if its broke don't fix it, right?? Well I don't know yet. The slick tricks are very tempting

If it ain't broke don't fix it! Been shooting and hunting with the Shuttle T 100's for 5 years now and absolutely love them. Last 3 bulls in 3 years, traveled 20, 25 and 50 yds. after the hit. Cow calling immediately after the hit helps. I've taken 27 elk with a bow and have used many different heads through the years. Shuttle T's have been the best so far for all my big game and fly exactly like my field points. ;)

As I revisit this post, it seems that while there are several broadheads that fall into the "the best for me" category, the majority shows that few are mechanical heads.

I think BHs are like bows, if they fly well for you and your confident with them, then this will help your path to successful and accurate shooting.

And how many bears come up to you to sample your Olive Oil covered Montecs?

For my low poundage bow (50#), I may be switching to magnus stingers 4 blade. buzzcuts were recommended to me, however, I not sure they are legal in CO. CPW Regs say: blades must be on the same plane.

Postby LNGBOWFLYER » 04 04, 2013 •  [Post 40]

Well for 2013 I will be hunting with my Longbow. My season starts in April and runs through February and I don't have any limits and can "hunt" both night and day. Actually I prefer hunting at night. Way easier. I have been getting pretty good groups with my "setup" out to about 2,000 meters. Since I like to change things up I have many different "heads" and setups I will be using it all depends on this situation and my mood. But I will have in my "quiver" hellfires, 2.75" folding fin rockets and the tried and true (my favorite) 30mm chain gun. :)

Now if we are talking about the 2014 season I will once again be using 125g Slick Trick Mags. And based off of Elknuts results my wife will he switching to the 100g Viper Tricks.

PS. Forgive me for my weird sense of humor.

I use the good old Snuffers.

To prevent rust, I use a Q Tip with Vaseline and run it on the cutting surface. I usually touch the heads up mid way through the hunting season. (Tip: Wipe off the old vaseline before you touch them up, otherwise it clogs your stones)

I'm a huge fan of Slick Tricks. They are the improved version of a Muzzy which is a great head... but gives me tuning trouble.

Awhile back one of our members, Seminole, gave me some Magnus Stinger Buzzcuts. I shot them yesterday for the first time and wow was I impressed. Looking at them tells you they'll do some damage but I have to say they flew just like my field points. Going to use them for bear next week. If all goes well I'll use them for elk too.

I'm going with these Anarchy Broadheads this Season. Carbon steel, single bevel, creates a twisting wound channel. Best head I've seen for penetration and durability.

Is the single bevel RW or LW? Whatever the bevel, you'll need to fletch your arrows to the bevel.
Lot of guys that shoot traditional gear are using single bevel heads, Im still not caught up in the theory...

From the demo on the site, it appears to be RW. You can really get these scary sharp, and they seem to hold an edge better than most broadheads.

I guess the "science" is that the slight twisting on entry "pops apart" the bone or tissue slightly, causing a more effective split, thus increasing penetration.

I just know they are indestructable and fly beautifully. I have killed a good number of elk with a bear razorhead without the bleeder blades installed, so when I saw these heads at the Marked 3D Nationals this Year, I knew they were for me.

Thats what the "experts" say behind the single bevel craze...suppose to split bone better. Ive seen a few elk killed by them, and didnt see any differnce in blood trails or split ribs compared to a head like a Zwickey or a Phantom.

Switching to Zwickey Delta 4 blade this year. 135 gr head + 125 gr adapter + 100 gr brass insert = 360 gr up front out of my recurve. I haven't killed an elk but have used mostly Snuffers and Ribtek 190's on deer over the years. A friend's continued success with the Zwickey's and my desire for possible better penetration drove my decision.

The intersting thing about this and similar threads is how people get attached to ONE broadhead, thinking--or at least saying--it's the best. As I age into the ripeness of my early 30s, I'm constantly seeing signs that 1) gimmicks come and go and 2) the best broadhead is the one you can place in the vitals every time.

This design over that design means...well, it means jack sh!#. 1.25" or 1.75" cutting diameter means as much. Stick a hole through a critter's lungs every time...not 9/10...but EVERY time, and it's going down no matter if it's a $40/3pack or walmart specials. Vent them. Consistently. And it's a done deal.
