ATV vs Rhino

Postby Solitude » 03 14, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Borrowed an ATV for the first time elk hunting last year. Took it back in a few miles until we hit the end of the ATV trail then hiked into the wilderness from there. Worked out pretty slick.

I am looking to purchase one used and am curious of your guys experience with an ATV vs a Rhino? Are there ATV trails that do not allow a Rhino? Is the ATV better to get around with or is it a push in your opinion? The fact a Rhino had the small bed in the back seems nice for hauling meat, but last year I packed (2) 200lb guys and a boned out elk on a 500cc ATV for a few miles, and though not overly comfy it got the job done.

Any advice, experiences or direction you could provide would be appreciated as mine are very limited.

Not sure what state your going to be using the ATV/Rhino in... ?

In Colorado, there are many ATV trails that have a >50" width restriction.
There are places that a Rhino is legal
And there are many trails that are restricted to MC only.

I would suggest downloading a Forest Service trail map of the area(s) you are thinking about using.
Maybe give them a call too...

I have 2 ATVs - one is a 4WD [with a winch] and the other is a 2WD.

The 4WD will go about anywhere I ask it to :)
The 2WD is not far behind...

I plow my road with the 4WD and it works great for that

Great point in the width and appreciate the input on the 4wd vs 2wd.

Any other input out there?

For bow season in elk country a 2wd is all you'll ever need. You don't need a massive 900 v twin either. A light 2wd will go very far. Just don't drive it in muddy fields. Most of the places we take them hunting are dry trails.
