nope, but i can freeze in the summer. if anybody else can get by with a 30 degree bag im gonna need a zero. im cold all the time, even in my house. so its gotta be a zero degree or even -20. but something i can carry. with that said i will freeze before i sleep in a mummy bag again.

I also was pretty disapointed in mummy bags.....until I tried a Big Agnes. Lost ranger model with a 15dg rating. That bag is awesome! Plenty of room to sprawl & roll around in.Great nights sleep with "big agnes".Prolly cant buy her for $100. tho... :(

I don't know of any good rectangular bags for backpacking, but I know that some mummy bags have a larger circumference around your feet. There is usually a measurement for them on the specs section when you are researching them. For instance a Marmot Helium has a hip circumference of 58 inches and a foot circumference of 40 inches and a Western Mountaineering Ultralite has a hip circumference of 51 inches but the foot circumference is only 38. The Big Agnes is larger still at 62 around the hip and 42 at the feet. Good luck.

bnafe..i kinda feel your pain. i used to sleep hot. something changed and now i get cold when i sleep. bummer i just bought a 20 degree Kifaru bag. i think the WIDE bag from kifaru would be fantastic as far as fit. my regular is a tad confining. if i had to do it over again, i would get the zero bag. in wide.

i dont know of a warm, tightly packing rectangular bag.

Yep the BA Lost Ranger and a Air Core pad is a tough combo to beat. Plenty of room at your feet and packs down fairly small.

Here's the link to the Big Agnes Ranger sleeping bag at the Sports Chalet site...

Don't forget you'll still need a pad to slip into it....there's no insulation on the bottom...

I have been using a Valandre bag with and Exped mat for nearly 5 years now

Why?
Comfortable night sleep! I have slept better than I ever did in my BA setup.
Extremely lightweight, small amount of real estate in your pack.

I have a summer, fall and extreme cold sets for camping in different temperatures, all in the name for sleep. If you don't sleep well, you wont hunt well.

My high mountain setup is the Valandre Mirage (Valandre bags have a larger foot box, than most other bags) with either the Exped DownMat UL 7 (cooler night temps) or AirMat Basic UL 7.5 (warmer night temps)

If you will be in a very high moisture climate and want a synthetic bag, give the Exped Dreamwalker Syn 133. You won't have to even get out of your sleeping bag to walk around camp if your cold. Our female customers love the Dreamwalker series of bags.

sleeping bag andf matt

Postby Huntography » 04 12, 2013 •  [Post 13]

I am a tall guy and like my space too. Mummy bags are hard for me to sleep in. I feel constrained.

So what did I do last year on multiple elk hunts and whitetail hunts around the country? I wore my late season Cabela's MT050 coveralls. They are warm, give me freedom to spread out when sleeping, have a hood, and are great to wear around the camp at night.

I have to weigh it and compare it to my sleeping bag as it may not be ideal for long backcountry trips.

Just thought I'd share that in case you already have a set of warm coveralls to try.

I spent almost three months once sleeping in a mummy bag. This was outside of my military service. The only way I could sleep well was with my feet elevated on my bag. I was surprised at how well I slept in that position. You can take a foam mat and cut that portion loose that you will not be laying on to save weight and space.
