Best Collapsible Water Container

Postby 6.5City » 04 18, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Looking for your thoughts on the best collapsible water container. Backpacking in for 7 days and the last two years we have gotten by with some cheaper versions. Last year we had two and one busted at the handle. This could have been bad if it was the only one we took. Anyone have any favorites out there? A two gallon container is about the minimum size I would want to take. Thoughts?

For a non filtration container, I like the MSR 10L bag. Very durable. Filter water into the bag at the stream and hang it on a tree at camp with parachute cord. Last year, we took the 10L and a smaller one with us. After filtering water into both, they'd last us (two hunters) for quite a few days.

I have the 10L dromedary and it works great with the Katadyn Base Camp.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the dromedary is the way to go. It sucks hauling water but is sure nice to have a couple gallons after a long day out of camp.

This is the way to go. MSR makes the best system on the market IMHO.

This accessory is also nice to have for filling up your hydration bladder in your pack without having to remove it. It can also provide a nice warm backcountry shower. :)

DUH!

it just dawned on me that you can buy an attachment to turn this thing into a hydration bladder..my camelback bladder is about to get dumped!!!

looks like the MSR product will fit the Badlands pouch much better. and this thing can mulittask!! huge bonus in the backwoods.

Check out the reliance containers. Have a 2.5 gallon collapsible one that weighs about 6 ounces.

I did some looking at the reliance products and thy had some mixed reviews. I was at Sportmans Warehouse today in Des Moines and they didn't have any of the MSR's in 10L.

Go to REI if you want to look at them in person.

Is the Collapsible Water Container to be used at a base camp?
Is the Collapsible Water Container to be used as a filter or are using a seperate filtration system?
Is this in addition to your water bladder in your pack?
What is the specific purpose(s) for the Collapsible Water Container?

If you just need a bag of water for storage at a basecamp we have had great success with the Katadyn Base Camp

If you are wanting to have a combination filtration/storage Collapsible Water Container we would recommend the with the Katadyn Base Camp

The non-filtered option would be the MSR Dromedary Bag

Curious as to why don't leverage your filter or chemical solution and your water bladder from your pack. As this what I do on my solo backcountry hunts. Additionally, I have a small water bottle that use to drink out of for breakfast and dinner while at camp.

I don't understand what you are saying I guess?

I treat my 10L Dromedary bag with Auqamira drops. That's it. Then I use that water to fill my hydration bladder or cook with for around 3 days until it's empty.

slim9300 sorry for the confusion, these questions were meant for 6.5City

Although your answers are spot on the point that I was making. The only difference is that instead of chemicals, I use my Katadyn Vario pump as the primary and Katadyn Micropur tabs as a backup.

I hope we get some Katadyn Micropur tabs in soon, we as other retailers have been out of stock since last September due to they experienced a manufacturing issue.

I've done some more looking and thinking about this.

It will be for base camp.
We have hand pump filters (Katadyn) and have purification tabs on us but havent ever used them. Guess I havent decided if a filtered bag will work better or if we should filter the water as it goes into the bag.
I have two water bladders in my pack and a bottle as well.
The purpose would be to fill this up, take it back to camp and use it for a couple of days without making another run to a water source. It will just be my brother and I this year and 10 L would last us for a while. Especially if we fill up our pack bladders.

I flip flop between MSR Dromedary Bag and the Katadyn Base Camp. It would be a lot faster to just fill the Base Camp out of the stream and let it filter as we need it. I've also heard that it is slow to dispense as it filters.

The last two years we have used bladders in our packs (2 L and a 3L) but that seems to run out to quickly. I'm paranoid about running out of water.

I have used a Nalgene Canteen for a few years now, not real complaints. Like the fact it has a large screw on top vs the zip lock style.
