Generator

Postby JohnFitzgerald » 06 14, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Ok guys, I'm about ready to purchase a generator. I'm leaning towards a Honda for how quiet they are. Needs to be big enough to run the AC and microwave for the summer camping trips when the family is present. Anyone got a good recommendation?

I have a Honda eu2000i for our camp and it will run anything we use in our pop up camper from a refrigerator, coffee pot, and a toaster. If you have a microwave or a/c you will want a minimum EU3000 and run each at different times. My other friend has 2 eu2000i's that he runs in series and he runs microwave and a/c at the same time.

My brother in law has the honda 3000 and his brother has the yamaha 3000. After being around both of them at the same time I would prefer the yamaha.

Check the BTU rating on your AC. I have an old lance camper that has a 7000 BTU unit and my Honda 2000 will kick it over. Most newer units will require 3K however. Some may need 3500 if it's in a big 5th wheel.
Also, the heavy wattage is only used to kick it over. Once started the AC doesn't use much, unlike the microwave or blow dryer.. I have not read anything bad about either brand.

I had the Yamaha 3000 before I gave it to our daughter and family. It is a great machine at good price. It is not quite as quiet as the Honda, but it is low enough that you hardly hear it outside when you are in the trailer. I have a cheap Champion generator now. It is reliable, but louder and it does not have the inverter technology. The birds and squirrels don't seem to mind where I camp, so it is fine.

You will need the 3000. Or get two 2000's and the parallel kit for a really flexible 4000. The 3k is really heavy.

Honda fan in a big way. The parallel kit does work well and the 2000s are way easier to carry around and deal with. I have used them very extensively over the last 15 years as a power source for medical monitoring equipment while doing physiological research on avalanche burial. Also use them in my RV.

Can't stand camping next to people with generators. I go all the way out into the forest to have some peace and quiet, just to have someone running one of those damn things all day.

Honda sounds good to me then :D
