Map Resources

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 11 17, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Map Resources for Wapiti Talk Forum members. Let me know if you have any you wish to add to the list.

Caltopo - http://caltopo.com
Acme Mapper - http://mapper.acme.com/
Google Earth - http://www.google.com/earth/
ArcGIS Explorer - http://www.arcgis.com/explorer/
USGS Store - http://store.usgs.gov
U.S. Forest Service (dropdowns take you to National Forests) - http://www.fs.fed.us/
US Topo - http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/

Below is a pretty cool and free way to download your own 7.5 M USGS Topos.
1. Go to http://store.usgs.gov.
2. Once the page loads, click on the Map Locator and Downloader link in the upper left corner.
3. With the Map Locator page up, you can either click around on the map (rolling your mouse to zoom in/dragging map left, right, up, down) or enter the location of the USGS Quad you want (if you know it). If you scroll in, you'll see the quads start popping up so you can choose the one you want. For example purposes, I’ll use a quad from WA State; Sleeping Beauty. After you enter Sleeping Beauty, WA in the Search line, make sure you click "USGS Map Name" from the drop down to the right then, click GO.
4. You’ll see your map pop up in the middle of the screen with an upside down pink teardrop in it. Left click on the teardrop. A selection screen will pop up on your map (you may have to adjust the page down a little by dragging the bar on the side so you can see the selection screen pop up). Go to the top link below the blue download button with the white arrow (this all shows in the actual map screen). You should see 37.11MB. Left click on it, then save (select your desktop as destination), and a file name for the map, i.e., SleepingBeautyWA.zip. Yes, it’s a big file and will take some time to download.
5. Once done, open up your “free” USGS top map. You can manipulate it a bit once you get into the map you’ve downloaded and can adjust the print size. There are map option selections on the left side of the window. On the very bottom, you can select images to change your map to a SAT view.
6. To select an adjacent map to the one you chose earlier, simply go back to the internet page, click on the “mark point” button on the right side, move your mouse to the next quad you want, and left click on the map. The upside down teardrop should appear. Just like before, follow the instructions starting with the left click on the teardrop in the new map to save.
7. Lastly, because your saved file it a PDF, you can do a “snapshot” of an area, paste it into MS Paint, mark it up, and send it back and forth to your hunting buddy while you’re doing a bit of remote scouting. Have fun!

Very handy, thanks RJ. This one is a multitool of topo, land ownership, game summer/winter/migration ranges, forest service roads/trails, gmu boundaries, and MJ dispensaries ;) for CO only.

Bing maps - https://www.bing.com/mapspreview

Typically has a little higher quality resolution than GE.

Hey guys, check out this website.

www.hillmap.com

zoom in on the area that you're interested in, then select overlays from the menu, and click on the CalTopo.

Shows you the amount of slope. I use this a lot when scouting new areas. Its also useful when finding new routes in the areas im already familiar with.

I like it, thanks Rob. The "dual map" feature is great (look at SAT on one side and contour on the other).

MyTopo is great at building and printing custom maps for you a very reasonable price: http://www.mytopo.com/?gclid=CMy1xOSK2qoCFQFzgwod2zHs5w.

On line, I use Wilderness.net, but it probably isn't much different than other programs using satellite, USGS, and Google-type maps together: http://www.wilderness.net/map.cfm?xmin= ... 74849.7374.

Any of you have a favorite or recommended place to have maps printed once you get something together that you like so that you have a hard copy in your pack for your hunt?

My topo.com is a great resource for selecting and ordering custom printed maps (http://mytopo.com/). Also, if you want to be adventurous and are not so worried about the custom part, you can go to this WT thread and select, save, and print out your own 7.5M quads ( viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3746) for free.

Get a load of this free topo/quad map site!

"National Geographic has built an easy to use web interface that allows anyone to quickly find any 7.5 minute topo in the continental U.S.A. for downloading and printing. Each topo has been pre-processed to print on a standard home, letter size printer. These are the same topos that were printed by USGS for decades on giant bus-sized presses but are now available in multi-page PDFs that can be printed just about anywhere. They are pre-packaged using the standard 7.5 minute, 1:24,000 base but with some twists:

>Page 1 is an overview map showing the topo in context
>Pages 2 through 5 are the standard USGS topo cut in quarters to fit on standard printers
>Hillshading has been added to each page of the PDF to help visualize the topography"
