Maximum Effective Range...Archery Gear...28 July 2017?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 07 28, 2017 •  [Post 1]

OK, on this day of the build up to the 2017 elk hunting season, what do you feel your max effective range with stick, string, and broad head is on a big stinky elk "if" season started tomorrow? I know most of you archery elk hunters are shooting your bows at this point so again, if season started tomorrow.... what would be your max distance be that you'd confidently zip a broad head at an elk and be confident it would hit where it needs to hit?

With the right conditions 40 yards maximum. Noticeable wind, brush, poor lighting, etc. it goes down to about 30. I really like 10 yards if the critter will cooperate.

40 yards is loooowwwwhanging fruit. I'll get giddy if I get an elk at 60. Longer than that, my eyes get wonky

I'm only good to between 20-25 yards with my recurve. Have passed up shots shorter than 20 because it just didn't feel right.

Right handed and left eye dominant, so i have to stay within my effective range.

If everything is right I would take a 60 yard shot. That being said I practice at 80 daily to improve my form. Nothing would make me happier than a 20 yard shot.

This evening I went out to shoot. The wind was gusting pretty strong. My shots reflected the problem I was having holding steady. My bow has a full quiver and is ready to go. Most shots were good, but some were off. Thirty yards would have been my maximum this eve.

I'd like to say 60, but in my heart, I know 40 is more realistic. Too much can happen in the time it takes for the arrow to fly 60 yards. I practice out to 80, so a 60 yard shot at my block is easy, but it doesn't react. I remember Chuck Adams catching heck for talking about 40 yard shots and now I see 100 shots on the tube. Talk about a Hail Mary! JMO.

15 yards. I left my longbow in the closet for a year and a half. I'm paying for it now.

50 has always been my number, it just seems for me that my mistakes affect my accuracy exponentially past 50 and as great as a shot id like to think I am, in the field, things just have a way of not being perfect

60 yards. Mine doesn't change year to year. I shoot 60 for most of my practice and shoot BH's every day at that distance.

3 days ago I would have said 20yrds.
I had bow tuned on the way home Fri and now I am looking 40yrds for me given my current ability. The gear will kill well beyond that, but not with me tripping the release.

I am shooting as good as I ever have, but still 40yds if conditions are good on a first shot on a healthy animal. the rules change on second shot opportunity
