15X binos

Postby Ben Nicholson » 08 08, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Anybody running 15 power binos on a tripod instead of a spotter? I can't stand using a spotter (probably because I have an old Nomad) so I'm considering getting some larger binos instead of a spotter. I'd still carry my viper 10's or 8's in my bino pack. Anybody do this?

Thanks,
Ben

Actually the Nomad is pretty good! I wish I had one, I loved that spotter! 15X won't come close to what the Nomad or any decent spotter will do. Keep the Nomad at about 30X or so with eyepiece all the way down, (can't remember if it adjusts out?) it's a pretty decent spotter! I used it a few years back sizing up deer that were near 1-1/2 mile out where 10X wouldn't even show a horn, yet there were 4 bucks in the group! Just food for thought!

Thanks for the insight Paul! I'll try running it around 30. I think I might try using an eye patch too. It's certainly a lightweight spotter so it's easy to haul along.

Thanks again,
Ben

I still have a pair of 20x60 binos around here somewhere. They work great during warmer weather. But when it gets colder, not so well. The higher the power, the less eye relief you have. At least this is true for the pair I have. I have to really get into them and the body heat from my eyes is just enough to fog up the lense.

Maybe the higher end optics are better. But I notice on my Leupold 4-12 rifle scope that the higher powers require me to get in closer because of less eye relief. My advice would be try before you buy.
