How about a "what's in your backpack thread"?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 05, 2018 •  [Post 1]

For those of you cats that do backcountry hunts (several to many days), tell us about what your gear list is that keeps you in the mix on your backcountry hunts. Tent, bag, pad, clothes, optics, water purification, cooking, kill kit, first aid, chow, electronics gear, heat source, Spiderman comics, ..... etc. What are your "necessities" for a backcountry hunt, what kind of gear do you pack in, and what is you target/max weight for say a 5 day hunt? Inquiring minds want to know :D

It depends a lot on the weather. When and where are you going? :D

The last on I time was a late August elk hunt. I had communications with home and camp (cell phone & Inreach), so I went light. I brought in what must have been the usual fare, but had a tree stand and accessories.

I used to have a list I could just copy. This will be from memory so I'm sure I'll forget a few things. This is for a 10 day hunt.

Pack: Stone Glacier Sky 5100 with lid

Tent: Tarptent Cloudburst III
Big Agnes Q Core XL pad
Western Mountaineering Alpinlite bag
Sea to Summit air pillow
Helinox chair

Insulated vest
Kuiu guide gloves
Kryptek beanie
Kuiu Chugach rain jacket
Kuiu Teton rain pants
1 pair Core 4 merino boxers
1 pair merino socks
Kryptek hunting shirt

Jetboil Sol
I small cannister fuel
Long handled titamium spoon
Titanium coffee cup
1 plastic trash bag

Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Small bottle saline solution
14 pairs disposable contacts
Small bottle lens rewetting drops
Small mirror
Handsoap leaflets
1 package baby wipes

Compass
GPS +/-, if hunting a new area i'll take it. If I know the area then I leave it at the truck.
Map +/-, same as the GPS
Extra wind puffer
Personal locator beacon
Spare buckle kit for the pack
100ft para cord
Extra Sawyer mini inline filter
Black diamond headlamp
4 AA lithium batteries
8-10 Glacier Country mouth reeds

TAG Bomb bags
Havalon knife
DH Russell Canadian Belt Knife
4 zip ties
1 quart ziplock bag
Elk tag

Space Blanket
2 Bic lighters with gorilla tape wrapped around them
2 medium telfa pads
1 roll soft gauze
Few ibuprofen tablets
Vaseline soaked cotton balls and dryer lint
3L camel back bladder with Sawyer mini inline filter

That is everything that goes inside my pack. The PLB and calls go in a Stone Glacier belt pouch. Bow is strapped on the pack. Can bear spray on belt if hunting in grizzly area.

My food Goes in a Stone Glacier load cell dry bag on the meat shelf. When I get to camp I can just use the bag to hang the food. Each days food goes in a 1 gallon ziplock bag. Trash put back in the ziplock.
Breakfast: instant oatmeal or cream of wheat with dried blueberries and rasberries. Packaged at home in vacuum sealed bags. 1 starbucks via
snacks for the day: 1 pack peanut butter crackers, 1 bag trail mix, 1 protein bar, 1 granola bar
Lunch: tortilla rolled in paper towel, large foil pack of tuna or chicken, 1 packet of goulden's spicy mustard, 1 packet miracle whip, pre cooked bacon.
Supper: Mountain house meal, 1 king size candy bar, 1 starbucks via

I use a FHF bino harness, Swarovski 10x42 SLC binos. Windpuffer in side pocket of bino harness.

I take gaiters, if it is wet or crossing streams going in I wear them. If it is dry I strap them on my pack.

Always take trekking poles and use them if I'm not hunting. Leave them in camp once set up.

No idea what my pack weighs fully loaded. It doesn't matter to me and I've never weighed it. I'm not leaving anything above out.

I would toss quite a bit of that stuff in jmez's pack and add a grunt tube. No use having 8-10 diaphragms and no grunt tube. If I have 8-10 diaphragms, some likely can trace their DNA back to the days of Esau, when he went out hunting to get an elk for his dad.

I always have a bugle tube. Forgot to put that on there. I have 4 reeds that I use. I have 5 reeds that I like. 2 bugles, 2 cow calls and one that I'll use for both. I bring a spare of each one. I do a lot of cold calling and I switch out the reeds multiple times during a session. They all sound different and I think it is more realistic when sounding like more than one elk.

About the only difference between a one day / over night hunt and a 3 - 5 day hunt is the amount of food you need. Everything else is the same as far as I'm concerned. The big question is::: How come everyone forgets to add TP to their list?? :D

I would hope no one would really do that kind of a stunt. I know of a fellow that took his dump in the creek, and he was fired from his logging job on the spot. I thought well deserved too. He was a poor performer so he was not missed.

It looks like you have more knives and more calls than needed, but where is your map?

The map was in my hunt pants side pocket. I have an older woman up the street add pockets to my hunt pants the way I want them for map, cell phone, sun glasses and my folding saw.

I really like the Randy Newberg edition Gerber replaceable blade knife. You have 3 blades to choose from and it is super light. I love super sharp knives.

I cannot really tell what some of the items are in Jhg's pack, but it appears to be pretty well stocked with everything except something to eat. I carry some snacks, and my Bible. I have time to read in my stand and a New Testament is perfect for me. I keep my range finder attached to my vest. I rarely have any special 1st aid supplies. If I cut or break something I will need to depend on my tee shirt, cord from my pack and belt to be my emergency repair kit.

My hunting pack has changed, the weather and how far from the truck will often depend on whats coming along.

I tend to take more when alone

Cheapo rain poncho, fleece gloves. I no longer carry a first aid kit of any kind.
Knife tag, cheapo fleece gloves
snackages
water
2 headlamps
red photon-led light
mini LED flashlight
game bags, a roll of painter's plastic
sometimes the binos,
sometimes a Montana decoy
sometimes a real lunch
sometimes more clothes, sometimes the clothes I peel off
TP
bright eyes/ reflector ties, reflector tape
lighter matches 9 hour s candle

Sometimes phone.
extra face paint, sometimes an emergency whistle Firestarter compass
And my watch is attached to the handle on the top of my bag

I carry most of my hunting stuff in my pants pocket

Always a resupply and extras in the ATV and pickups
