Wow, new savage shooting great.

Postby wawhitey » 01 14, 2018 •  [Post 1]

So i got a savage 16 lightweight in .243, put a leupold vx2 2-7x33 scope on it, and a witt machine break. Its a very light, very cheap setup. 6lbs with scope, all in for less than $1000. Its shooting lights out. Cant believe it. Took my first crack at the 200 yard target today, and got a sub 1/4" group right off the bat. Thats less than 1/8th moa, with a low power scope and cheap factory ammo.

That is excellent. I usually do not expect that kind of accuracy from a light weight hunting rifle.

I dont expect that out of any rifle, let alone a light weight $500 rifle with a $280 scope and otc ammo. So many things i like about this gun, its just flat out awesome. Decided im going to get another one but in .308, and go with the same model scope, but 3-9x instead of 2-7x.

I shoot the same gun, and it shoots great. But not as great as yours. Nice pattern.

Dont know what youre shooting through it, but give the 95gr federal fusion a try. They shoot crazy good in mine.

Im going to do a lot more shooting tomorrow. This pencil thin barrel heats up fast, so there will be more waiting than shooting going on, but im hoping to get 2 boxes of ammo down range. Ill probably adjust my elevation to a 200 yard zero, then do some shooting at 300, see how that goes.

Impressive shooting!!
And maybe even more so that the gun and ammo holds em that tight.
Let us know what it can do at 300

Four clicks left. Shot is 4" low, because zeroed at 100. Aiming at bullseye at top left of frame. I did the 4 clicks left after that group, then put the gun back in the case. Will dial 8 clicks up tomorrow. Either way, that tight group is what matters. A couple minor adjustments will put those little clover leafs right where i want them.
I suspect my 300 yard grouping will be less than amazing, because 7x magnification. But ill do my best, and report back.

It's not often a shooter can out shoot the gun and ammo.

Jeez, I don't own any rifles that can shoot a group like that at 200 yards (at least not with me behind it).

Many years ago I had a Savage bolt action in .30-30. I grew to hate that rifle - perhaps unfairly. It turned me off to Savage and I have never considered one since. Maybe I should take another look. I am always partial to Browning and Remington but the Savage are priced pretty well.

This is killing me. Nasty weather out, and if i want to shoot more than 50 yards at home i have to do it outside. Not to mention i feed my deer in the winter, so i dont want to shoot here this time of year, as it would bother them. My dad has a shooting bench set up inside his shop, so i could go shoot there, but he has the flu, so im not going over there. Waiting for him to get better so i can go do some more shooting without getting sick.

Dont let an old .30-30 sour you on an entire make of rifle. My dad put together a savage .243 for long range. Not a conventional long range caliber, but he wanted to do it. He ordered a savage action, a 24 or 26" bull barrel, added a brake, put it on a bell and carlson stock. Barrel is an 8 twist i think, very fast for a .243. He developed hand loads with heavy for caliber bullets, and the thing is crazy. His first time shooting long range with it after load development, he rang the 1200 yard steel 5 for 5. With a .243.
Also, a friend of mine killed a 6x6 bull at 902 yards with his savage 111 lrh 7mm rem mag in 2016.

Yeah the Savage Actions are pretty killer, even their Axis line are shockingly good shots for the $. They have the original Axis and the newer Axis II. The new one has the accutrigger and accustock, really nice triggers. The old ones have a classic trigger that tends to be stiff and gritty. I know a few peole that own old and some that own new, pretty much all of them shoot at least MOA, I have owned a few old style and sold as I am/was looking for specific options and they are not available in Axis line, but they were all shooters. Axis line is a great truck or thrash around in woods/crawling thru anything rigs. Cheap so no worries if you drop or ding them up. Drop it in the mud, make sure barrel is clear and fill your freezer!

I have a Savage Hog Hunter 308 right now, Model 11 action and accutrigger, I am just getting ready to start load development on. It did not care much for 150grn factory deer rounds I tried. With 1:10 twist it probably wants heavier bullets, so I have 168, 175 and 178grn bullets due on Monday and then the fun begins!

.308 and scope arrived today, and i ordered the brake. Ill be shooting it as soon as the brake arrives. Today i played with the .243 some more. The 8"x4" steel target sure looks tiny at 300 yards with only 7x magnification, but i had no issues ringing the crap out of it every time, shots right around center. If the .308 shoots half as well ill be thrilled.

Delaying my cougar hunt until monday, better weather coming. So i did some work on my new lwh .308 today. Got it thoroughly cleaned, adjusted trigger down, mounted rings and scope, all level to the world, torqued to spec, and boresighted. Its ready to start shooting as is, but im waiting on the arrival of my muzzle brake, so i did some shooting with my weatherby today. Anyway, i now have a .308 clone of my super lightweight .243.

you need a muzzle brake? i think it messes up the lines of a svelte bolt action..

but if it was a suppressor :)

how does that one work? it threads on the end of your barrel? you have to get barrel machined? all the brakes i've seen are intergrated into the barrel.

Barrel is too thin to have threaded for even a micro bastard brake, so i found out about these clamp on brakes. I was a little skeptical, but theyre actually pretty slick. I have them on 3 rifles now. http://wittmachine.net/index.php?main_p ... cts_id=180

talk about that warm fuzzy feeling shooting that group for your first 200yd group!

it's flat out amazing that rifle shoots that well, and equally impressive you shoot that well! hope the 308 shoots similar.

i'm in the market for another rifle, just kind of undecided what niche I want it to fill. I have my sako 7rem mag, it shoots really, really good, I love that thing. I don't know if I want to go ultra light, or long range paper puncher (I will keep my shots at game inside 500, just because) that savage certainly has me thinking shooting that well. i'm wanting a smaller cartridge, I don't hunt anything bigger than bear, and my 7 mag covers that well enough.

I also could set my 7 mag up different and use it for a paper puncher, it is certainly capable..... then I could get something really light.... maybe a savage ;) that is dang impressive.

I have really been considering a seekins ph1, but I certainly wouldn't expect it to shoot any better than that savage of yours (or as good in reality) ya got a good one.

for some reason, lots of guns seem to like the federal fusion, it's the best I have found in my sako for factory ammo.

CONGRATS! if it keeps shooting anywhere close to that good, it would easily be considered best bang for your buck, super lightweight, and 5,000 dollar custom rifle accurate.
