Bigfoot Rifle Arrived

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 02 07, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Well, as you all know, we have Bigfoot here in the PNW. It's always a conundrum as to "which" rifle/round to pack in the woods just in case you run into one (of course bigfoot are real, haven't you seen the 60s video?). .338? .375? I considered those but I chose what you see below. We always talk about shot "placement". Well, I figure Mrs. Wapiti and/or I can put one down, with the rifle we chose, if the need arises. It may take a few rounds though ;). Shot placement will be key with a marauding Sasquatch. I've gotta get to the range and sight this thing in.... before we venture into the woods again.

Wrong bullet! Site in with V-Max. You won't regret it. Cuts those little varmits in half and never comes out the other side.

Ya, I remember you mentioning those Bill. I just grabbed what was available at the FFL when the rifle came in. I'll get some of the V-max ordered up before I get serious about ripping some holes in paper.

Ha, my fridge has a very small leak from something. Turned the water off for the icemaker and the leak seemed to stop; now to find where it is (possibly the hose itself). Ya, the Lead Sled is something I picked up last year based on a recommendation from Indian Summer... It works good when shooting the bigger rifles. I just have sand in the bags now but will fill em with lead as I get a chance. Ya, I don't think I need the bags when shooting the .17 HMR :D.

Seems boresighting has evolved beyond the garage. Or did Mrs. WT let you add a shooting range onto the dining room?

Out to give the .17 some range time tomorrow. First time out so we’ll see how my crude bore sighting does.

The new plinker shoots pretty darn well. I zeroed it at 50 yards (didn't need too much adjustment and I shot more rounds than needed but heck, for the minimal cost of .17's, I just kept plinking). Finally, moved the big target out to 100 Yards and the pic below is my best group (5 rounds). Not too darn bad; if only I could shoot my bigger bore rifles this well ;) . I did however, have some issues with the Savage magazine. It seemed to stretch out/open up at the top a bit (making the rounds not chamber correctly) and I had to lightly crimp it back together with my multi-tool pliars. I'll keep an eye on it in future range visits but I may need to invest in another mag. RJ

There is a spring lever on the bottom of the magazine port. Hold it back when you insert the mag. That should cure your problems.

Ya, I've got that down Bill but it seems like the top opening of the mag (where you feed the rounds down and in) seemed to "open up" a bit after I shot 40 or so rounds today. Touched it/pinched it back together a bit with a multi tool and no more issues for the rest of the morning. I'm gonna order one of the 10 round mags I see advertised.. After some research, it seems like a few others have had issues with the factory 5 round mags getting kinda loose on top. Not a good thing. I'll send Savage a note and I would assume they would send me a new 5 round mag but I fear the same issue may arise.

Yeah, factory 5 round mags are terrible, wait until you are whacking sage rats, open the bolt and 3 rounds come pouring out of there... Been there more than a couple times. When I go east to shoot rats, I always bring one brand new 10rd, hope I don't need it, but often do after 500ish rounds. Besides that, great little guns, insanely accurate
