What's in your elk pack part 1 - Kill Kit.

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 04 16, 2018 •  [Post 1]

What do you cats have in your elk pack for a kill kit? I probably carry too much (overkill in a way..... ha, ha...get it ;)...). At any rate, curious to hear what you folks have stowed away in your elk pack for that joyous moment you need to pull it out and get busy on that downed wapiti!

I carry the following stuffed into a large VIAM Outdoors G3 bag:

4 - 20' lengths of 650 paracord
1 - Chili powder
1 - Fixed blade knife (Elk Track); 1 - Two sides diamond sharpener; 1 - Replaceable blade knive (Outdoor Edge) w/3 blades
2 - Surgical gloves
2 - Large black plastic sacks (nice to lay meat on during processing, and, to line pack with)
1 - VIAM Outdoors game bags (Hunter pack)
1 - SOG folding saw

I didn't include flagging ribbon and small bottle of spray peroxide in my kill kit list as they ride in top of my pack for quick access.

Well, what's in your wallet, errr, Kill Kit?

I'll add 100 foot of new cheap clothesline to that list and a light plastic painter's 3-4 mil drop tarp that Walmart sells for about $2 and is only 2-3 ounces.Great to lay pieces of meat on while you are quartering.I don't fee l bad about cutting up the clothes line for hanging meat, maybe tieing up legs to nearby trees while skinning and quartering.

I do have a small folding saw,but I found a neat 12" long miter box saw at Lowes that I will keep in the mule panniers.I keep garbage bags in there too to place the bagged meat in while I am packing it back to to camp.Meat bags stay with the mule too. I am never that far away.

Fairly close to that, I keep my tag(s) in mine. Thinking about carrying some of these to help with locating in the pitch dark. Think it would help to keep critters away?

Jeff, good idea. I’ve used chem lights in the past at evening kill sites with good success and I usually carry a couple in my pack for GP. Only thing I’d recommend is get the ones that last as long as possible so they last all night if necessary. I think mine are rated at 10 - 12 hours but I’ll have to look.

A knife and game bags. Don't over think it  I keep the game bags in the very bottom of my pack because they are about the last thing I'll need on a hunt.

I don't have a replacement blade knife or sharpener. My knife makes it through without getting dull. I only have 1 garbage bag and seldom use it for that as I use the inside of the hide if I need to lay something down. Usually, it goes right in the game bag. I always have had another person so don't use the paracord either. If I was alone, I think my kit would be pretty much the same as yours.

Just a tip for cocktail parties with your nonhunting friends. Probably isn't a good thing if people overhear you talking about your kill kit. Although they may treat you nicer.....? :?:

I carry matches, para cord, a folding knife and painters plastic.
a fire to let the bears know I will be coming back,
I figure the first trip out Ill bring the rest of my butcher/kill kit,.. that gets big fast. game bags more plastic, plastic bags for the pack, saw, pulleys skinning and butchering knives steel and diamond sharpener.
I need to had the hot pepper.

Most hunts and in a sense my stuck overnight stuff is part of my "kill kit" in my pack.

Mine's pretty simple.

Tags Bomb bags
Havalon knife and a few blades
Elk tag
Quart ziplock bag, I use this to put over the proof of sex and zip tie it shut
Few zip ties, I zip tie the tag to the bag with proof of sex in it
50' paracord
Pen to sign the tag

The best change to my kit was adding a pack hook. For field processing solo its been a real benefit. Especially pulling hide.

Stainless and aircraft aluminum. Really nicely made. I think if you google "abowyer pack hook" it will come up. I've done a bunch of elk and this has made it much easier to field process.

I exchanged a beat up large storage box for a Husky(Home Depot) tool box as a meat box with all the kill kit
