What's in your elk pack part 2 - Sleep System

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 04 20, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Let’s roll with part 2 of this super awesome series of threads on “what’s in your elk pack”. What do you cats have in your elk pack for a sleep system? For the purpose of these threads, let’s assume we’re talking about pack in hunts.

I carry the following:

Tent – Nemo Hornet 2 Person w/footprint
Bag – VIAM Outdoors 10 degree quilt
Pad – Klymit Insulated Static V
Pillow – Klymit (can’t remember the style/name)

Chair (if I’m feeling energetic) – Wildhorn Terralite
Cot (if I’m feeling really energetic) – Desert Walker Outdoor UL

I may end up packing in my Luxe Megahorn Tipi this year so hunting partner and I can camp/hunt in style (and have a bit more protection against the late September Idaho wilderness area weather). Of course with the Tipi goes the Lite Outdoors Titanium stove.

Well, what's in your elk pack for a sleep system?

I have a bunch of outdated gear but it's still good quality, just a bit heavier/bulkier than new tech.
Depending on the weather forecast and amount of time I'll be out depends on what I pack.
For shelter I like to use either my Beibler bivy sack or Yukon hammock with net.
In the case of less than perfect forecast I have a mountain hardware 1p or northface
Tadpole 2p- both utilize same footprint.
For bag I have a big Agnes's 40* down, northface 20 down or a go lite 0 down. Each weigh about a pound less than the other.

Pad- I'll typically use a Mont Bell (Japanese company) insulated 3/4 length pad. Also have a full size thermorest and a roll-up type foam pad.

Pillow-I typically use a jacket. Think I may pick up an inflatable this year.

MSR Fast Stash tent, Gerry down bag vintage 1975 or generic hollofill mummy bag if above 30 degrees, Klymit static V pad or thermarest shorty self-inflating. New this year: Thermarest UL cot, probably insulate it w auto windshield shade.

Pad - Thermarest Neoair XTherm

Bug Bivy from TiGoat (Keeps Pad, Bag together so I don't fall off, keeps bottom clean if I'm right on the ground, doesn't trap condensation)

Pillow: Cocoon Aircore Ultralight Inflatable

Bag / Quilt: EE Down Quilt or Kifaru Synthetic Bag

Shelters: Kifaru Sawtooth or Paratarp for floorless. Big Agnes Copper Hotel if I want a tent.

Cot (optional) - Helinox Cot Lite

Wood Stove (optional): Seek Outside Medium Titanium

Chair (optional): Helinox Ground Chair

In my pickup I go for real comfort
1 inch plus military high-tech closed cell foam pad,
overlayed with indoor out door carpet foam
3 1/2" insulated (or Two 2 1/2" pads if anyone else is with me)) Cabelas self inflating pads
If my wife is along Costco memory foam covered with a sheet.
-5 Grizzle Big Johnson bag
Memory foam pillow
C-PAP

In reality when camping sleep clothing is part of my "sleep System" depending on the season and temps
Wool socks,
merino wool top and bottom underwear,
Cabelas fleece pajama pants
cheapo fleece neck gaiter
Sitka hoody
Balaclava

My pickup system; I will be sleeping in tonight, the two most important items are the
1.) military foam pad with carpet
2,) Sitka hoody. I never thought I would fall for the high end clothing thing but the hoody was a game changer on teen digit and colder nights sleeping

One other item in my pickup nearly always, is an old wedding gift. 1/2 of a Adam and Eve poly fill sleeping bag, good for napping, unzipping the main bag and tossing over on warm nights, cold nights my "yeller " lab has that, I hand it out to scouts that I know who weren't prepared

Upgraded big time this year, a camper :)

But when I pack in I take
Hilliberg Akto
Helinix cot
Enlightened Equipment 0* quilt
Helinix chair

If really cold I’ll bring
Pad - can’t even remember what I have anymore as the cot is all I’ve used lately.

If I bivy its a sil tarp, a 15* down bag, ridge-rest over a heavy duty garbage bag cut open as a ground cloth.

I had too many cold wet nights that I bit the bullet and upgraded my tent and bought a stove for it. Having a way to dry out inside is awesome. It was really expensive (IMO) but overall a good investment.
KIfaru sawtooth - medium stove
Therma rest neo air xl
Big agnes mcalpin

Use the same set up for camping back near the truck. Ive hauled a base camp tent before. Hauled trailers out with sunflower heaters and in the end I feel like im saving room and money by packing one system. I do plan on adding a cot to the mix for camping near the road. would be nice to leave my air mattress compressed.
