Dang wolves

Postby wawhitey » 01 19, 2018 •  [Post 1]

I just heard wolves howling from my porch. Theyre a ways off to the west of me. And the icing on the cake, found 2 cougar killed deer in 1 week on my property, and today i found a very large set of fresh cougar tracks behind my house, and heard ravens and magpies making a ruckus on my hill, so im sure theres another fresh coug kill up there. Its no wonder so many of my deer disappear.

Can native trap them also.

There is one fellow who as soon as wolves showed up on the Fort Hall Res, he took two on the res before Idaho had a season

I think states are better off introducing wolves rather than letting them show up as they are now doing in Colorado. If they are introduced, the state has a better case for managing through hunting. If they return to the landscape on their own the state has to make the case for what "natural recovery" numbers looks like. Of course this is my opinion which is worth exactly what you payed for it.

I have to disagree with that. "If they are introduced, the state has a better case for managing through hunting". Look at the poor management of other wildlife Colorado has done and when has any one seen a govt agency mange anything better.. Look at the states that reintroduced them and how long it took them to prove they had huntable numbers after the damage was done to livestock and wildlife. As I remember, in Yellowstone the reintroduction called for 10 breeding pairs and a limit of 200 wolves. That as soon cast aside with no limits and no control.

In Colorado I don't know of any prosecution for shooting a wolf and you can bet even if there is,hunters will use the SSS method of controlling them.

Listen, you can’t “re-introduce” an Apex Predator, particularly one that is not/has never been native to the lower 48 (i.e, Canadian wolves) into an established eco system and expect it to work and “balance out”. Our legacy Timber wolves have been gone for many years and the Canadian wolves are a different ilk. I sincerely hope folks, including our uninformed legislative bodies, get this before it’s too late......

Ive had several chance encounters with wolves, but never called any in. Im sure its just a matter of time before i do.

I havent been predator calling as much as i should. Only called 4 times this year, with no results. Cougar hunting works much better with a 2 person team, but i cant get anybody to go hit the mountains with me in the winter. Buncha pansies. Last year i only predator called twice, but got a bear and a lion.

That is a pretty good percentage. I know I always have big plans to call for wolves each winter, but have only really made one serious trip with no results. One of these days...

If youve got a good area and want a partner im down to head to idaho. I can grab a wolf tag and lion tag and bring some calls.

I know where some are in September, not sure about now? Don't think these elk migrate so they may be in the same general area, but I don't have good winter transportation. Couple of buddies have been trying to get me out so hopefully I have some stories coming. My wife has been pretty sick really since October, but unable to get out of bed for a couple weeks in Jan. So I have to get that figured out first. She has an auto immune issue that hasn't been officially diagnosed yet. Every specialist just sends us to more specialists.
