Shed Hunting - The "Ultimate" Thread

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 11 05, 2018 •  [Post 1]

As many of us are starting to think about the upcoming shed hunting season, I figured I'd get a brand spanking new shedding "tips, tricks, and faux pas" thread going. Faux pas... good word huh; its so rare one gets to use it in a sentence ;).

OK, please offer a tip, trick, mistakes made that you have learned from, etc.. These can range from when, where, how, to include not only boots on the ground as a primary method to shed hunt, but/and/or, the use of shed sniffing pups and how to train them up for this great early year sport. Ask a question, offer a tip/trick, or just tag along for the ride... RJ

Hunt south and west facing slopes and flat area that open up early in the spring. They will be where there is fresh green forage. The bulls are usually just below the snow line when they drop their antlers. Where was that? If you find one antler, look around the area as the other is likely to be close by.
I don't know about faux pas but it is a mistake to just look for them from a motorized vehicle. You need to get out and hike around.

My step daughter (12yrs) got a English shorthaired pointer and I have been helping her train her. Part of that is teaching the dog to point sheds. She has an unreal nose.

I am really excited to go shedding this spring with the dog. We make it a family thing and bragging swagger rights goes to whoever finds the biggest shed. Its not quite cutthoroat, but lets just say we all want to win that bet and so we keep our eyes peeled.

Not sheds but a couple heads I found bush wacking in some tough timber. I think these bulls died from wounds recieved from hunters but there is no way to really know that except location.
