Introduction and stuff that I make

Postby Osage Outlaw » 02 01, 2019 •  [Post 1]

Hello, I just joined this forum yesterday. This year I will be going on my first Elk hunt in Colorado. I live in S.E. IN. I thought I would introduce myself and it was suggested that I post some pictures of the longbows that I make. I am big into making something myself instead of buying it. These skills really help when you have a tight budget. I don't really sell what I make. Most of the time it is a gift or a trade with a friend. I hope you guys don't mind a lot of pictures.

I cut osage orange trees and make selfbows from them. I like to use the natural curves and flaws in the wood when possible. I hand split these logs into bow sized staves. I sell these at different trad archery events to fund my trips and to buy tools and hunting equipment.

This bow was for a friend. He killed a buck and a raccoon with it.

I made these two for another friend in a trade. The holes in the darker bow are healed over bullet scars.

This bow was for myself. It's pacific yew and backed with a snake skin.

This bow won Bow of the Year in the primitive archer magazine. A friend started it and I finished it up.

This was my first kill with a bow that I made. The arrow is bamboo and the point is knapped stone. The buck went about 40 yards after the shot. The point was unharmed.

I collect draw knives, hatchets, and axes. I am starting to restore some of them.

I also do a little metal work. I made this stove out of propane tanks to heat my workshop with bow scraps.

I just finished making this forge from a propane tank. I am wanting to learn how to do metal forging. I've messed around with it some before but never had a decent forge to work with.

I have been making a few knives with stock removal. This was my first attempt.

I have only made hunting knives so far. I want to make some larger ones when I get some more equipment.

My two does from last season with an early 60's Bear Kodiak Magnum. I made my own camo. It looks terrible but it's proven to be pretty effective. I've had a lot of deer in close range and haven't been busted yet. I used it for 2 seasons and filled the freezer.

My biggest build has been a rustic teardrop camper. It started out as an old boat trailer I designed it for the archery events that I travel to. I can store over 100 bow staves in the back cargo area. That's around 1000 lbs of wood. That's why I went with a boat trailer. The weight is over the axles. When I'm not hauling wood I pack all of my gear back there. I did a slide show video of the build.

I also made a log arch trailer. It sure saves my back. I used another boat trailer. They are cheap and easy to find. Here is a short video of it in action.

I use a barrel sled and my old UTV to haul the logs out of the woods.

I shoot a recurve and longbow, but making them yourself is several steps above where I am on the trad ladder.

Pretty cool stuff.

Cool! I like the way you display your knives on an antler.

You have great talent. I like the bows, but am not going to go traditional.

I took a backwards approach to it. I went from a compound bow straight to making my own wood bows. The last few years I've been getting more into fiberglass recurves.

Love the hatchet!!!

Ive turned a few goose calls from Osage orange.

I had no idea the tree grew that large and produced a real log!

They are usually a gnarled shrubby tree. Finding a large one with a straight trunk is hard to do.
