Odd Questions

Postby Swede » 06 18, 2019 •  [Post 1]

I have been asked some strange questions over the years about wildlife and deer and elk in particular.
One such question was. how old does a deer need to get to become an elk?
Another question concerned a deer with a severely broken log. Can the game department give it a prosthetic leg?

What odd questions or comments have you heard?

We use to go to Yellowstone very September to photograph. Two questions were "What time do they turn the steam on for the geysers? " and "What time do they turn the animals loose?"

This has nothing to do with age. It is a function of altitude

Ive heard and been a part of some strange Yellowstone visitors.
People claiming coyotes were wolves,
moose were elk
I can see mistaking a jackrabbit for a snowshoe of a cotton tail for a pygmy
or a rock chuck for a yellow bellied marmot
Some of the mis conceptions about some animals,.. like Timothy Treadwell syndrome

I was in a dicussion and belive I made my point to a ranger in North Cascade National park. She thought north Cascade would be a great site for reintroduction of grizzlies. The parks has everything a grizzlie needs. I suggestd that grizzlies need a food base , something that doesnt exist after grizzlies come out of hibernation in March April or May

For some reason, while in full camo, hunting pack on, and packing my bow on the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), on my way to a designated "drop off" point to begin the day's hunt...... I have the long-haul PCT hikers ask me "is it hunting season". I never do, but always want to respond with "nope, I'm just taking my bow for a walk" :D

Seems to me the SB hikers on the AT are equally strange.

I was in Rocky Mtn National Park 2 years ago and had a tourist from Boston ask me if the black bear we were looking at from 150 yards was a hyena. I gotta admit, I kinda got tongue tied cuz I didn't know if he was serious or not. Turns out he was serious. Some serious Nature Deficit Disorder for him and his family.

I've heard of thru hikers but what is a SB hiker. There are tons of youtube videos on the AT and I agree there are some strange people on the trail.
