Yellowstone/ Island Park

Postby Fridaythe13th » 07 22, 2019 •  [Post 1]

In a couple of weeks we are headed on a family vacation to Yellowstone staying in Cody for 1 night and driving to Island Park to stay in a VRBO. What I'm looking for is food, gas and booze is there a store or 2 ( butcher shop ) in the island park area to buy supplies or should we shop in cody? If there is not much for grocery where is the best place to resupply. Thank you

What a relief it was when I got to the end of that post. I thought at first you were looking for donations for booze thinking honesty was the best approach. It appeared that some of the street corner beggars and wayside restroom beggars had found a new realm to panhandle in. It could be considered a new approach to living off the land. :D
Anyway best wishes on your trip, Friday.

There is a restaurant/bar in Island Park. It’s Pons or Ponds, not sure, like I said, it’s a bar. I seem to remember a small grocery store, did I mention there’s a bar?
Seriously, you might want to stock up in West Yellowstone.

Ashton has the nearest real grocery store
The are a couple convenience stores that border as a lame grocery store
For a town claiming a 25 mile long Main Street there are more fly shops than available food

West Yellowstone has groceries and booze

If your taking kids consider the horseback rides in Harriman state park or Yellowstone
The short rides

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I should stop in cody and fill the coolers.

My wife and I mistakenly stayed in Island Park 2 years ago while on a scooter trip out to the Oregon coast and back. There is absolutely nothing worth spending any money on as far as food goes in Island Park. The little motel was so crappy that we got up and out of there by 6:00 am the next morning at 34°, put everything that we had on to stay warm enough to put some miles between us and there. Couldn't get out fast enough.
But we did end up finding an awesome breakfast up the road about 20 miles or so towards Yellowstone at a fly fishing outfitter by chance.
Have fun Eric! don't forget to hit up the Plains Indian and the Winchester museums on the west end of Cody. Its a 2 in 1 building type of stop. Worth the stop.

As Backyard said, be sure to spend time at the Winchester Museum in Cody. We spent an afternoon and the next morning there a few years ago. I could have stayed longer, but the wife and daughter got bored looking at weaponry (I know, unimaginable). Have fun and stay safe on your trip. :o

I'm in the same boat with the wife and kids, but plan on stopping and we are hitting the rodeo, I've never been to a rodeo.

If you’ve never been to a rodeo, you’re in for a good time. Took my bride to the PBR Finals a couple years ago. She’d never been, now I’ve got a rodeo junky on my hands. Yep, she’s into tractor pulling and bull riding.

I am getting fired up about the whole vacation but for some reason I wish we would have planned 1 whole day in cody. It sound like a fun town.

Cousin just got back from Yellowstone, she said it was super crowded, maybe school starting in some areas will bring down the crowds.

My wife has reminded me to put my patient pants on sit back and enjoy.

Middle of July through August is the worst
Get moving early in the morning to see the busy parts.

Yellowstone is a big place and everyone tends to squeeze into all the places near the roads

Four years ago I took my wife into Shoshone lake
More real solitude than any part of the boundary waters and just as many mosquitoes

The geo thermal stuff is really neat to see but busy

The Cody Rodeo is designed for tourists and a bit more fun than other rodeos .

I’m headed to Preston tonight (Famous night rodeo)
Next week bulls only at Fort Hall

There has got to be an elk hunter who use to rodeo

Try the Snake River south of Hoback. From there drive to Alpine and up Greys River Rd and fish that. Lots of beautiful holes in both. Too many people up near Jackson.

Thanks Indian Summer,

I will check those out.

I have applied for the backcountry lottery in Yellowstone but hope to stay at least 10 days in the area and hit as many places as we can.

Im not a fly fisherman. The Snake gets hit hard . Expect lots of company and a boat is generally needed.

Wading
Parts of the Henrys fork can be less company, The upper Buffalo, The Warm, Teton and Falls Rivers.
