What happened on the elk hunt?

Postby Lefty » 09 27, 2019 •  [Post 1]

It’s been one experience after another
An some incredible experiences Wednesday and yesterday too, but no elk for the freezer , yet
While calling my daughter was on a trail in a quakie thicket and she had to step out
Of the way as some of the herd-came running down the trail , the the whole world exploded in elk.

A little spike with 6” of horn wouldn’t leave the thicket and danced aloud 17 -21 yards but the cover was to heavy for a shot.

Then Yesterday evening , my daughter was sure the bull was hundreds of yards away , she took a step and it was just where dad said it was, 20 yards past the big tree she was trying to sneak past .

Sitting at the call location for thirty minutes and not hearing me make a sound she watched and thought I was sleeping. She grew tired of me “ sleeping”
When she busted the rag horn checking out my location

Thursday evening we spotted a 5x5 some distance off
An hour later he had moved across and up the canyon and we were running out of daytime .
The5x was pushing his cows up and away
Well is there another bull around?
I send Julie and Andrew to the bottom of the canyon where I stated raking and stomping
Thebull started coming towards us but hung up.
We don’t have much time to continue a slow play
I took off running up the drainage , a few cow calls

A round up bugle and kept moving making plenty of noise
The bull next bugle he was right on Julie and Andrew or so I thought
A bull moose didn’t like what I had been doing to trees and gas cut the incoming bull elk off. Andrew thought letting the moose know he was there was a good idea Andrew stomped his foot
The bull moose evidently took that as a challenge, the processes to shred and tearing up quakies while grunting and huffing

Just to be on the safe side Andrew chambered a round of his bear gun and backed out fast
I’m 300 yards away stomping on deadfall sounding like a party of cows calves and a bull elk .
The bull moose was fired up .
Tearing up more trees snorting-and making a ruckus as he strutted towards me.
He passes Julie
Then winds her at 15 yards the bull moose starts displaying
Right or wrong it worked out, Julie ran through the thicket up the hill and down the ridge towards me
What kind of excitement have you had this season

Tonight. I took one of my favorite companions out
A distant bull was slowly working our way
This squealing bull came between us , then I heard A Hochie Momma

So two hunters thought they were getting between two bulls

Their sound is so distinct that it is identifiable
