On Your Own

Postby Swede » 02 17, 2020 •  [Post 1]

Many of us, myself included were raised in a hunting family, or we started off tagging along with a neighbor friend. I am wondering if there any of you that started off hunting on your own. What got you started and what gave hunting some direction in your life?

My dad guided “dudes” for ducks and pheasants
He also was often the shooter when party hunting white tails
He also wanted to make sure his boys weren’t raised doing what he did( wrong)
Deer hunting was a big family thing for him
He wasn’t obsessed with hunting like he was walleye fishing

Nobody in the family hunted. Bought my first .22 off a cousin and was hard on squirrels for several years.
Started reading and talking to classmates about deer hunting. Bought a slug barrel for the Mossburg that I’d bought. Not much luck gun hunting for deer.
Got my first bow, a Bear Whitetail, when I was 16. Read everything I could get my hands on and started bow hunting. I remember reading somewhere not to overthink bowhunting. When I stick to that advice, I do pretty good.
It’s been a long learning curve, but I’m glad I took that first step. Some of my best memories are hunting with friends and family.
