Aiming with a Bow (Both eyes open?)

Postby GoGriz1234 » 06 29, 2020 •  [Post 1]

I have been flinging multiple arrows down range in preparation for the up coming season. After getting ok grouping for a few days with one eye shut, I randomly opened my shut eye halfway (so I was aiming with 1-1/2 eyes open) and I shot right where I wanted to. I have repeated this now on a few occasions and even with both eyes open (kinda like shooting ducks). My question is does anyone shoot like this and is it a real thing? For some reason when I shoot like this everything seems to be more stabilized and calm - just wanted to see what the group had to say on this.

Thanks!

I always shoot with both eyes open. That is the way I learned to shoot, but It seems to help me see the arrow in flight.

This seems like an appropriate campfire discussion, so I will move it in a little while. Be prepared to find it over there soon.

I think I only use 1 eye, but I'll follow this thread to see if that needs to change!

Long before bow sights were even thought about, we did it. It was called instinctive shooting. At most on long bows and recurves you had an arrow rest. Before that, it was the top of your fist that held the bow. You looked at where you wanted to hit, and held the same anchor point every time. Once you knew your bow,it was not hard to master.

You should always shoot with both eyes open if possible. It gives you better depth perception, and will make your aim better.

I shoot a rifle and shotgun left handed and keep both eyes open

And shoot a bow right. Sometimes a problem until I’m focused through the sight

I recently got certified to teach children archery and first thing I do is get the correct bow handing, weight and length so the fit is correct. Handing of bow is chosen by eye dominance. Once the handing is correct, it is proper to shoot with bow eyes or non dominant eye partially closed. I personally have to squint for clarity. I also shoot shot gun with both eyes completely open but rifle through a scope is one eye. I suck at rifles though...
