How long before you hunt?

Postby Lefty » 08 19, 2020 •  [Post 1]

How long time wise does it take for you to leave home and start hunting?
If we drive the speed limit we can be at camp in a hour and 40 minutes.
We can and have been hunting 20 minutes sooner
Bear hunting I have a short distance off blacktop but top speed is 6 otr 7 MPH
Or leaving from camp sometimes an hour to a trail head or parking area
Ive always lived close to hunting. As a kid it was a15 minute bike ride for squirrels. Duck hunting and quality fishing was 6 miles and maybe 12 minutes .
Washington state big game and trapping was over an hour. Duck wa 8 miles but 25 minutes.
Utah,My deer area I could see from the house, 2.5 miles and 4000 foot elevation,.. or 45 minutes on the ATV and an hour walk in
Utah duck hunting 4 "city " blocks and we could hunt the city Park . Normally 3-4 minutes in a vehicle to good shooting.

My goose pit is a mile from my house so that’s quick 8-)

Varies for me. ID or MT (haven't hunt MT in a handful of years tho) hunt areas are 9-12 hours away; takes a good day to set up camp usually. In WA, again it varies; 10 minutes (to local deer and sometimes elk area) to 3 hours drive time and depending on the location, type of hunt/time of year, again can be a full day setting up camp. We normally don't hunt the day we arrive at camp with all the set-up that needs doing (particularly, if we arrive a day or two before season opens ;) ..). This SEP, we're pulling on on FRI the 4th, 9-10 hours drive, will arrive at camp mid after noon and set up camp through the next day. We may get out SAT evening to a couple of listening spots. SUN morning it's on like donkey kong!

I suppose 9 hours to camp from here. I can leave here and get the basic camp set in one day. The next day I will spruce it up and make it more homey. I can get to where I plan to hunt deer in about 6 hours, but it is in a totally different direction.

45 minutes for hogs and squirrels.

2 hours to whitetail archery spot

24 hours to reach Billings MT.

14-15 hours to the trailhead I hunted last year in CO for mule deer.

About 1600 quick miles. Google maps says 26 hours but I guess that’s if you’re not going to hunt elk!

Idaho elk/mule deer: 10 hours to base camp. Varies from there between 5 minutes and 2 hours.

WA Blacktail: 30 minutes or so to gate, then another hour bike riding in.

WA bear: my current high country spot is 1.5 hour drive and a several mile hike, it's worth it though. Could definitely find bears closer to home but I love the alpine bear hunting.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

14 hours most years.

we normally take 2 days to make the trip. drive about 11 hours on day 1, then 3 hrs on day two, giving us plenty of daylight to get camp deployed.

the trip home is a single long day, but that gives us plenty of time to update the (already on the books) plan for the next year.
