I guess my skills run toward the latter. Went out lion hunting yesterday. My fawn distress calling did bring in a whitetail doe, but no predators, did 2 stands in an 8 mile hike. But it wasnt a total failure. My mom really wanted some elderberries to make syrup, and ive only been seeing green berries until yesterday while i was trying to call in a cougar, and i started finding ripe berries. So out came a couple of my small game bags, and i ended up carring around several pounds of elderberries for several miles, worried theyd get squished if i put them in my pack. At least i didnt come off the mountain empty handed.

I filled up a couple of times with red and black currant berries.

I do have a sweet area where I deer hunt, lots elderberries If the cows or the moose don't get them lots and lots of them some years

I sure missed the elderberry jam my mother made years ago. We would go out and pick buckets of them.Unfortunately a lot of areas in Colorado have few wild berries. Some raspberries, and huckleberries ( currents) The most is choke cherries. Bears like them but it takes a lot of sugar to make anything of them.

It's taking me most of my life to mix fun and pleasure and fun and other pleasures.
I used to be individually focused.

Hunts used to be just one thing going out and chasing an individual species.

Next weekend I'm hiking into the blueberriest covered mountain I've ever had the pleasure to hunt. They should be full tilt on the south face by now. I plan on eating as many as I can. I won't be packing any out, it's about 8.5 miles in to this place and a few thousand feet up.

This was the best huckleberry season weve had for a few years too. If youve never had huckleberry margaritas or daquiris... you dont know what youre missin. Huckleberry banana bread, huckleberry waffles.....

Wild strawberries were great this year too, but even on a good year theyre few and far between, so i dont bother trying to take them home, i just eat them on the spot.

I found a patch of wild strawberries a few years ago. Man what a find. I haven't been back in a while, and I'm sure the forest around them has grown up too much to allow for much productivity there anymore.

Yeah the strawberry plants are extremely common here, they grow everywhere, but most just dont seem to have berries on them. And even when thry do, the berries are hard to spot, growing so close to the ground and often hidden under leaves and grass. Gotta really look close to notice a patch of strawberries.

Our hunt yesterday got interrupted by wild Red raspberries.
I don't believe I've ever seen so many so late in the season
