Lake of the Woods Mn Fishing

Postby cnelk » 07 14, 2013 •  [Post 1]

On our way home from Minnesota now.
Had a great time seeing relatives and friends.
Celebrated my grandpas 99th birthday too.

My son ended the trip with a bang by hooking into a 42 inch pike yesterday!

More pics to come

Yes. Northerns his time of year are pretty sleek.
Spring and winter is when they fill up on fish to get the sow bellies.

When we weren't out in the boat, the kids were down at the dock near US Customs

Here is a nice slot walleye my daughter caught and released at the same place my son got the pike

When it was too windy to get out on the big lake, I took the kids to some of my old haunts that produce nice walleye from shore.

At this place the walleye were again in the slot and couldn't keep, but fun to catch

Nice Cnelk! I would love to just see Lake of the Woods some day. Looks like you had a well rounded good time. 99 years old, that's awesome. I have an never ending supply of Lake Erie walleyes but in my opinion those northern eyes or pickerel as they call them are way better eating. I've had lots of fun reeling in those pike too! My biggest ever was 46.

Francis [fm]
I was nice to meet you and your daughter too.
Did you catch anything?

We made it home at midnight last night - 1100 miles in 17hrs

The ol' '97 Chevy Silverado has another 3000 miles on it from the past 2 weeks

Brad
It was slow for us, got into some sauger just before dark. Might go back up in a couple of weeks and try again. It was to hot on the water to even enjoy it. It was worth it though, the sturgeon where jumping out of the water like crazy. Had one jump about 20 yards behind the boat.

Looks like a lot of fun and great pictures. Love LOTW fishing and am trying to get there yet this summer. Were you seeing much for down riggers when you were there?

Aaron
The downrigging technique is fading after many many years of success.
In fact, yours truly was one of the first ones to drag shad raps out in the main lake about 30 years ago.
The success was too great not to tell.
Then came downrigging.

It's hard to beat to anchor up over the reefs out 30 miles and jig, or anchor up in 25-30 fow just outside the gap.
A 1/2 oz gold jig tipped with a frozen shiner is the ticket.

From shore, we had best success using leeches
