Fall Walleye

Postby cnelk » 10 30, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I'm up in northern Minnesota again.
My grandpa I came to visit in July passed away.
The funeral is on Friday.
So until then, I am doing some river walleye fishing.
We are on the Rainy River near Baudette Mn across from Ontario.

The fishing is tremendous. Catching fish that are too big to keep !

Its chilly here but the fishing makes up for it

It was a cold morning on the water, only 2 hours of fishing until feet and hands were cold.
Managed to pick up a few more.
Headed out again this evening.
Won't be long and ice will be covering the river

Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you have a lifetime of good memories with your grandfather.

I would like this site to ban anymore of your fish pictures. :P I always end up having a craving for fish after I see those Walleye. I have never even tasted a Walleye, but they look so tasty.

Safe travels.

If you want to have some great walleye fishing, I would recommend heading up to N Minnesota in October.
Be sure the shiner minnows have run upstream in the Rainy River

The walleye can run big!
You can only keep 4 under 19"

It is a great time, dress warm tho

Some pics and vids for your viewing pleasure

You are right on dressing warm. I have never been as cold as fishing in the boat in the winter. (I used to fish the Mississippi around Red Wing in Jan/Feb) A power plant keeps the river open for a section.

Try fishing when you need to put Chapstick on your line guides to keep them from freezing. Having to hook on a fresh minnow almost brings tears to your eyes because you have to get your hands wet, again!

Nothing like jigging for walleyes. I know of several people who head to Rainy/Lake of the Woods (Summer).

BUT if you want REALLY big walleyes, head to Red River/Lake Winnipeg (It is close to the same from Fargo. Other than the border hastle). Guys I know who go, it has ruined Rainy for them. It is that good.

Thanks for sharing!
