Unconventional Buck Harvest

Postby elkmtngear » 11 19, 2013 •  [Post 1]

There's no Season on all these crazy rutty bucks up here in NorCal. Needless to say, there are bloodstains all over the highways right now.

I was heading home around 10PM on Saturday night. I dropped my guard for just a second, and the whole world exploded. Air bag went off and the windows were steamed in. I was doing around 60.

I pulled over to the right shoulder by braille, and remembered seeing the image of the big buck out my front windshield. So, I got one with the bow, and one with the truck this Season.

Glad you are okay. However, your vehicle likely did not fair well.

Good reminder that most big game vehicle hits are in October and November. We did have a rare summertime increase north of Colorado Springs due to the wildfire.

I hope everyone has safe journeys during Thanksgiving.

Thanks mtnmutt. Radiator was pouring fluid, hood was bent, grill shattered, bumper bent, headlights, etc.

Still waiting for the insurance adjuster to make the call. Only "injury" was a slight burn on my left thumb from the airbag.

As you already said, please take care everyone!

I am glad you are ok after the accident. I too have hit a few deer over the years, and a few couple have hit me. Hitting a deer is no fun for sure. That is one situation where I wish I did not have airbags. This time of year large bucks, like the one you hit, do not have their mind on just eating and staying safe. They are distracted so watch out.

I agree, Swede!

This was my first airbag experience, and I was less than pleased. I never made contact with the airbag because the vehicle somewhat absorbed the impact and my arms took up the shock. Loss of visibility was the bad part, fortunately I have trained myself not to swerve when I hit an animal, or when impact is iminent.

yea. the Toureg wasnt that destroyed. what got hurt was some wiring harness. in order to fix it, you had to get the entire harness new. and thread it throughout the car's airbag, safety system..and that was $$$$$$$..

the broken wire could have been spliced and taped with elec tape!!! but VW wasnt allow to do this. so they totalled it. crazy.

buddy was fine. he was actually towing a race car in a trailer. like you, he just drove straight thru the deer..no swerving.

good luck. what kinda vehicle was it?

2008 Nissan Frontier 4x4. Maybe that's why the insurance lady on the phone said something about when the airbag deploys they often total it :?

No Paul, I couldn't bring myself to look at the damage :(

I went back the next morning and got the picture of the buck (the truck was in the impound yard by then).

I was looking for my license plate..never found it.

Sorry about the truck but glad you are OK.

Maybe you should make a slip cover that looks like a mountain lion and put it on the front of your truck. That way, when the deer see a charging lion coming down the road, they will all get out of the way!

Thanks Bill

With all the critters that have hit me over the years, I should just make one that has a big bullseye! :(
