Most Popular?

Postby Still Hunter » 01 09, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Hunting for whitetails is the most popular hunting in the US.

What animal do you think is #2?

Cottentail rabbit. And it is probably even more widely hunted than the whitetail deer.

To be honest. I was surprised by the answer. I'll let this go awhile.

For big game I would say hogs. They probably inhabit more ground than any other big game animal in the us, besides the whitetail. IMO.

Damn. I was struggling between bears and hogs, but I figured hogs would take it.

Stillhunter, do you have a complete ranking for us?

I tried to find one, and i'm not sure this is accurate. It was mentioned on a hunting show. I failed trying to find a list.

It sort of makes sense. I believe you can hunt black bear in every state.

i just wish it was more popular in my immediate area. we are INFESTED with bears here and they do serious work on the fawn and calf numbers. not enough of the locals around here seem dedicated to doing their part on predator control, but they all whine about the deer and elk numbers. or if the state would let us each take two here or something. in one small area that is just a portion of one 7.5 min topo map, i put out a handful of cams and got over 50 bears on them this year, most of the cams not even baited. thats too damned many in my book. here is a sample of some of the bears i got on cam this year. (may have posted these somewhere here before ) all in same general area, and this isnt even all of them that i got pics of, and im sure theres lots more i havent seen.

I look at all predators the same and hunt them all whenever its legal. I carry a rifle in my rig year round for coyotes or anything else that is in season.

Wawhitey, what's the bear tag situation like up there? OTC or draw. What's the cost of a NR bear tag?

No way to get a cat here without dogs. It's hard enough getting bears.

Coyotes? Yep, all year long.

fall bears are otc in washington, but spring bear is draw. fall bear seasons start either aug 1st , aug 15th, or sept 1st depending on gmu, and go until mid november. you can kill 2 black bear in western washington, or one in eastern and one in western, but cant kill 2 in eastern for some reason, even tho ne wa has highest bear numbers. give me a sec ill go grab regs and tell you non res cost.

i dont know if the tiny elk population here would benefit from a bunch of elknuts showing up, maybe im better off with all the bears! ..... on another note tho, i have a bear rug waiting for me, young cinnamon phase i shot, going to go pick it up on sunday. would have got it already but im sick as a dog and im kind of quarantining myself. driving me crazy i want to go cougar / shed hunting so bad but just going out pulling some of my cams almost killed me.

I guess I was thinking about the old days when all the states had bears.

I'm just getting in to hunting bears, so i'm learning.
