Postby Elkduds » 02 03, 2014 •  [Post 1]

CO CPW is seeking hunter input as they reconsider the state's 5 year big game season structure, which resets in 2015. Here is the link if you wish to have input. Note: this form must be mailed or dropped off @ a CPW office.

Sent in my $.02.
Went with
1. bnsafe s bear baiting. But fall for me.
2. Reduced cost of second tag for NR. Ex: if I spend $600 bucks on an elk tag let me have a bear or deer tag for $100.
3. Pref point usage. : if I have four points and apply for a unit only requiring two then don't zero out my inventory let me have a balance of two.

Dave
Your number 3 is what is called Point Banking.
It was tried a few years ago for only one year.
I also recommended that it be tried again, but it must be in place for a minimum of 3 years for any long term effects to be seen.

My wish is to see the muzzle loader season moved back until after the archery season, or at least later in the archery season. Nothing against muzzle loaders at all, just happen to like archery more. But given how many preference points are required to draw muzzle loader elk tags, its both popular with hunters and a cash cow for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, so I don't see anything changing.

Garrett
Be careful for what you wish for.
If it wasnt for the CBA [Colorado Bowhunters Assn] there wouldnt be 4 weeks of archery.
You thoughts have been brought up many times.
If they adjusted ML season in any way, the current archery season would definitely take a hit in a big way.
And we wouldnt want that now, would we?...
Start tapping on the bees nest and you're gonna get stung

I'm somewhat new to this game, I didn't realize there is a history behind the overlapping season. I'd be interested in hearing more about it.

I'v tapped on a bees nest before, and know enough not to do it again!

Pm sent.
Main thing to remember on any forum is to be sensitive about another's choice of weapon, style, etc.

Tripleb, I just read this thread. I don't see anyone being insensitive to a choice of weapon. Do you?

The CDOW took away 2 weeks of our season in the early 80's at the prompting of the "then" CBA board of directors which frustrated many bowhunters. Colorado went from a 6 week season to 4 weeks and the percentage of animals taken has remained pretty much the same since then. The reason was to get more into the elk rut which holds merit but had very little or no affect on the harvest.

So if you will go back and look at that loss of two weeks it was a VERY good feather in the cap of the CBA that we got 4 weeks. At that time, the DOW proposal was to cut the season from 6 weeks to just 7 days! An organization like the CBA to have pulled enough clout to override the CDOW's proposal and get 4 weeks, they did well! Since that time, the CBA has done a great job in maintaining that 4 week season despite attacks from all fronts over the years.

The archery season is not considered a management tool. It is only now slowly becoming a $$ generating asset. The other seasons [ML/Rifle] have greater power because of the popularity and $$ generated.

The CPW could care less about the Archery Season.
So like I said, back away from the bees nest and be content you dont get stung.
