hog hunting

Postby fm » 02 18, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Some of the guys on the elknut meet topic talked about hunting hogs. Anybody know where the closest huntable hogs would be to Mn. This is a hunt I would like to do.

I was probably one of the guys talking about hogs. Only been on a couple hunts & they were both at the same ranch in Tx. It is a blast & the pork I brought home was excellent . There probably is something closer to you but I wouldn't know specifically where. Bow site has an outfitter review that might be helpful. Oklahoma has some terrific hunts & the farther south you go the more hogs. Tx is covered up with them. WW, Bullnuts & myself were 3 of 6 guys from here in Colo who went. By booking with at least 6 hunters we were able to have the entire ranch as well as the bunk house to ourselves...somewhat...that's another story & probably why we haven't been back, but we are thinking about doing it again. Chime in Bill

hog hunting

Postby BarW » 02 18, 2014 •  [Post 3]

Guys you can kill all the hogs you want on public land in east Texas no outfitter needed. We spot and stalk, stand hunt over bait, and night hunt hogs almost year round ( July and August it's just too hot ). It's the best way I've found to keep my hunting skills sharp and the meat is great. I'd post some pics but I'm on my phone and tapatalk won't let me.
I try to hunt the big boars to test out my arrow setup because a 250lb boar is the closest thing to an elk I can test drive my setup on. My largest to date is a 260lb boar on public land but we caught a 320 lb Barr hog on some private land I lease.
If y'all have questions hit me up. If you wanna make the drive and hit some public land spots let me know.

I'm always game for a hunt fellas. I work 14 days on and 14 days off so I can feed my addiction. lol. Certain spots this time of year you can bait out for hogs on public land ( it's illegal during deer season ) because the hogs are so thick. One place I hunt the state baits the hogs in to shoot them because they are destructive, the place is archery only and receives almost no pressure from other hunters. Only thing to remember is where the hogs live the Mosquitos are the size of humming birds, but a good thermacell makes the hunting enjoyable.

I could catch some fresh ones. Don't know if I would like the drive though. Wish it was closer. I now some guys from Co. that hunt where we do that just got back from there and got some real nice hogs. Only way I would be able to go that far is if I brought my wife with by telling her we were going on vacation. She would be wondering why I was packing my bow and hunting gear

BarW that's our state bird. One nice thing about winters up here we get a few months of no buzzing in our ears and bug spray.

Here ya go fm! North Star Gameland in Montour, Iowa. Might be a little pricey but a heck of a lot cheaper than driving all the way to Texas. I hunted there about 40 years ago. It was a great hunt back then.

Yea if your looking for a hog with big tusks that you can make a nice euro mount a game ranch is the way to go. I've got a couple nice ones over the years with maybe 3" tusks but nothing crazy. I don't like eating boar hog because the sows and Barr hogs taste so much better so I generally only target those hogs. East Texas average hog size is about 80 to 100 lbs for a sow and up to 150 for a boar. About 1 out of 20 boars will be 200 lbs plus and maybe 1 out 100 or 1 out of 250 will reach 300 lbs. biggest I've ever seen was close to 400 ( it bottomed out our 250 lb scales after being gutted and having the head removed ).

BarW... If you know of a place where we can either stay at a cheap motel, or if some of you southern boys would be able to set up a camp in some good hog country I'd come to an Elknut meet down there.

We could have a blast and get away from the winter weather up here. I just looked at airfares, $346 from Pa round trip. Not too bad. I'm sure if we had 9 months or something to shop around we could get a flight even cheaper.

My vote for a meet and greet is for a hog hunt down south where there seems to be the most of them and on public land. Bring a smoker!

Hotels can be had for $75 a night lots of camp grounds close to the national forest for $15 to $50 depending on if you want to tent camp or get a primitive cabin.
Unless its raining its generally nice in Texas from about this time of year until it gets hot in may. I say generally because it can be nasty. As far as places to hunt their several thousand acres of national forest land. But it's kinda like elk hunting because if you don't know where to hunt you might never see a hog. But I'm sure I could scout out a few places to get some folks on hogs. I'm not sure on out of state license fees, I know it's not real cheap though.

First pic is a good size boar I got last month about 200lbs or so this pic is I'd say average size of hogs you see in east Texas all less than 100 lbs
All sows or shoats.

I should know better than anyone about using the word guaranteed but if I travel to hunt hogs I want to know I'll kill one. Id like to do it on public land and I don't mind hunting hard. But Id also like to see lots of others getting animals too so if we are better off going to a nice big preserve I'd do that too. Places I hear about in Texas sound like they are all but guaranteed. like anything else I'm sure you have to be in the right place.

The easiest and most guaranteed way to hunt hogs in Texas is over a feeder/bait site. If the weather doesn't cooperate then it can really put a damper on hunting in the national forest. Also for out of state guys I'd check with some of the game ranches because lots of places have turkey/Hog/and possible exotic hunting offered on the same hunt. Heck I'd like to do a central Texas Turkey/exotic hunt myself.
I'll do some research see if I can find some links for you guys.

It's been a couple years since we hunted Tx, but I believe we paid $50 for a non res hunting permit. Possibly could have been so reasonable because we were hunting a commercial place. We also tried to time our hunts before it got too hot . BIG Texas rattlers also were taken into consideration. Not afraid or nothing, they just make me pee myself... I would think Jan- March would be about perfect. easeup & Mark, speak up with the wisdom of a certified hog killing Texan. This sounds like fun to me!

Just googled Tx hunting & it says no license is required to hunt feral hogs. $ 48 for a non res 5 day hunting permit, but if I'm reading it right it is not necessary. Here in the pot smoking state of Colo, you can't shoot a common sparrow without a license...LIBTARDS! :x

Hog hunting is good year round on a ranch that feeds corn, but in the hot months you have to hunt mostly at night which is legal for hogs in Texas on private property and can be a blast. November gets a lot of hunting pressure because of rifle season. Best time I think to hunt hogs is January to may if your baiting them as that's when they hit the feeders hardest.

Bugle master I thought they had recently changed the law about not needing a license for hogs. I might be wrong but I'd call the TPWD to be sure.

You can usually add in an exotic animal to get more meat and something different too hunt on most of the ranches in Texas. 4 day hunt for hogs, exotic, and a Texas dall sheep can be had for about $1200 on the low end to $$$$$$$$$ on the high end depending on what you hunt. Or hogs alone on most places are $150-$200 a day for two hogs. Some places even offer unlimited hogs.

My funds are limited as they are primarily devoted to elk hunting so we'd only be hunting hogs and varmints. I found a ranch online that offers unlimited hog, predator and varming hunts for about $350 each.

Go to texasbowhunter.com go to there forums section then go to the rate the day lease section. Best reviews your gonna find. Most ranches are pretty good but there are crooks out there, I'd hate to hear y'all got taken.
If you sign up you can ask questions about ranches you are considering. It's a very good forum.

and I have never partook of the high fence ranch places even though given a good reason would join in. I pay to hunt a small place out west and there are pigs there but I never see any during daylight. In fact, I am amazed at the amount of pics on the forum of guys shooting pigs in the daylight! Texasbowhunter.com is a good place to get a references and see user opinions as stated above by barW. just a little on my heels to recommend something I haven't seen myself that's all.

Do you hunt hogs at night easeup? That is a blast with a bow and a kill light. I'm trying to purchase enough kill lights so my whole clan can join in ( 5 bow hunters in my house ) the fun.
