The Last Straw

Postby timberland » 02 21, 2014 •  [Post 1]

This last winter storm might be enough to convince my wife we need to move to the Southwest. Was looking at southern CO. I don't mind a LITTLE snow or cold as long as it's short-lived. This northern midwest winter is RIDICULOUS :x . Any suggestions? Small town, good scenery, access to some fishing and a larger town within 50 miles or so. AND ELK, of course.

No state taxes in Texas and were all real friendly. Plus you can hunt hogs year round. But you gotta travel to get elk.

With that loose criteria, I'd be somewhere between Montrose and Durango

What are your criteria for "small town," and "larger town?" Moving to work, or retired?

I always struggle with winter this time of year. I would LOVE to "winter" elsewhere...Florida maybe, and live here in CO for 8 months out of the year.

About thirty minutes south of Denver. 45 minutes to excellent fly fishing, GMU 51/511, excellent school district. I'll give you a great deal on rent. ;)

I thought this area was mild. But Florida would be warmer.

Not too wooried about work but it would dictate final location. Wife's an rn and I wprk in wastewater/utilities. Looking for a town about 2000 residents. Living and grew up in nw WI. Right now 60+ days its been below zero and @ 4' of snow on the ground, which will probably be here til May.

Ugh! I could not handle that! I had a Yooper buddy once describe summers up there as "Three months of bad sledding".

I live in eastern Iowa and we are at 26 days below zero. It is going to be highs in the single digits again this week with lows in the teens below zero. Not much we can do about it. Think positive timberland. Maybe some of the darn mosquitos and gnats will die off this winter. :)

The hard part is the cabin fever. No amount of gear tuning, organization, research, etc replaces getting out and walking in the woods. Heck, I live in the woods and can't see over the snowbanks. The dog doesn't even want to go outside anymore. :(

Also I'm worried about the deer herd. Haven't seen a deer or turkey in about a month.

We haven't had a single day below zero this year. In fact, I don't remember a single day of my life here that it got below zero. We have had a couple inches of snow, though.

timber, I have been chewing on the wife about moving west ever since I went to Utah back in 2010. she is finally starting to warm up to the idea. got a couple of vacations planned this summer to Wyoming and Idaho to help soften her up a little more :D
I will agree that this winter was a bit more painful than most. the snow doesn't bother, it was the 50 days of below zero weather that sucked big time.

gotcha, I used to deer up just north and east of orr. that was before we started elk hunting. I don't feel bad not going anymore, as everyone I know who hunts area said the wolves are out of control and the deer have disappeared.....

its that way from the iron range to the border. I saw the effects of wolves and the DNRs 5 deer tag seasons on the deer population. it got decimated in the areas I used to hunt. I still think they should implement a 4pt restriction on buck up there. I dare ya to say that in public. your bound to get into an argument with 99% of the people you say it to

not to argue. I would rather see a 1 deer area rather than a point restriction. the one year I shotgunned in area 3, which has the restriction, the only deer I saw were early or late in low light conditions. couldn't fill the freezer that year.... all because I wasn't sure if it was a buck or doe.
