Hunting bucket Lists, Let's Hear Em....

Postby Indian Summer » 03 03, 2014 •  [Post 1]

After reading Lefty's "What else do you hunt" thread I got to thinking. What animal is it that you haven't hunted but want to? Also, is it something you think you'd like to do more than once or just a one time adventure?

For me it's two things. First I'd like to do a 2nd Caribou trip. Two actually. I'd like to go back to Quebec because I had a fantastic hunt up there before. But I'd also like to try NW Alaska for caribou too. I can see me doing that hunt DIY more than once. Success is high enough to take different people with me from time to time and have lots of fun and good hunting.

The other is moose. I've wanted to hunt moose, giant moose in Alaska, for years now. Had a couple hunts planned that fell through. I have an extremely detailed plan for a DIY hunt for big bulls that started with a tip from an internet friend. But this years elk hunting partner says he's in for 2016 so we'll see.

Usually I make it a point not to just dream about my bucket list. I'm more like the Nike slogan that says just do it. Some day I'll probably make a trip to Africa and New Zealand.

The one other thing I'm dying to do is hunt hogs somewhere down south and maybe on a regular basis in the winter.

What's on your bucket list?

Here's the order from not likely to likely. Central Asia for Marco Polo Ram, New Zealand for Stag(archery), Alaskan Moose (archery) but will probably end up in Ontario for moose in a few years. Otherwise Elk has been my go-to for adventure, it fits the bill nicely. Did archery caribou, once was enough for that and archery antelope. I think a trophy elk is a loftier goal for me than any North American Sheep with as much adventure

Archery Moose...doesn't matter which species or where.
Want one mountain lion, prefer with my bow but would also think about a pistol.

If I ever hit the lotto, Alaskan brown bear with my bow! Think that would be a kick

I think you brown bear/Grizzly guy's are NUT's.

I am really looking forward to a Stag/Elk bow combo in New Zealand here in the near future. I'm curious if they will understand English calling :)

Two for me. Kodiak island grizzly with a bow and cape buffalo with a bow. If I had to choose one it would be buff.

Alaska Moose. Been looking at the float hunt, think it would be great. Would settle for a cabin. Seems like a very doable hunt. This hunt I would want to repeat.
Alaska Brown/Grizzly with bow. I keep hearing that guides .416 going off in my right ear after I release my arrow. This hunt is so expensive I would probably only do once if I ever am able to do.
Mule Deer. In the rut.
Elk and Black Bear. Combine this in same season, been doing some research on this.

HA, I probably need to be more realistic with mine.....kinda like you said if I am ever able to do it. I have started researching a spring black bear hunt with archery equipment. Would love to try it some time and seems like it would be a decent price.

Desert bighorn ram
Moose
Caribou
Midwest whitetails
Coues deer in Arizona
Also started accruing preference points for Arizona bull elk, this is a hunt that will happen God willing and the creek don't rise as soon as I build enough preference points. May even pony up for an outfitter even though I kinda consider that cheating, not against the idea it's just a different way of doing things I guess.

The animal I would most like to hunt is a moose. I would be happy with a good Canadian moose. I enjoyed my N.W.T. caribou hunt. I would do that again too.

When do you want to go? If you get serious I will send you some info I have. Maine and eastern canada have lots of bugs. Idaho has color phase. Buy preferance points for Wisconsin. Don't forget Wyoming, or Alaska, Montana (no baiting).

I had a friend kill an oscellated in Mexico. I didn't get too excited when he was getting ready to leave. But man alive when I saw that bird I was impressed! it was in incredible looking creature. Every time I hear someone say that I think I'd like to do that.

Yep... archery bou is way up on my list. Like I said I'll probably do that several times. I love the tundra.

My bucket list is something I plan to do not just wishful thinking.
After retirement I hope to partner up with a long time friend and run a fox long line in his home state Well I guess it is mostly coyotes See what a couple old retired farts could do to the canine population
Trap a real muskrat lake with my grand kids
An Idaho moose,.. thats where all my early draws will be for as long as I can shoot

20 years ago I fished an island in Alaska, I would like to make a two week trip again but for deer bear, halibut salmon, crab ,clams

I want to catch a wolf or two or three.
I would like to run a trap line for martin, just for kicks
Help capture and tag deer and elk
Kill a goose with a sling shot,
Catch a goose by hand during season

I feel kind of weird saying this but A 350+ bull

Alaskan Moose

Bison
New Zealand Red Stag
Argentinian Dove hunt
Canadian Snow Geese hunt
Pig hunt
Midwest white tail hunt
The above are not in any particular order and would be rifle or bow, don't really care. Just want to go.

Archery pheasant hunt - Something I saw on tv and would love to give it a try.
Archery "carp hunt" I want to shoot one of them with a recurve when they're jumping out of the water.

Rudy-
Thats an awesome bull. I see that you weren't able to save the velvet, that would have been pretty cool. I shot a 390" caribou and tried hard to save the velvet (almost a qt. of formalyn in each side) but lost it. The velvet hair was 1/2' long chocolate with gray striping. Oh,well. Congrats on the longbow trophy.

Nothing against the bait piles but I would like to hunt them on the ground away from that. I had looked into Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. I have heard about the bears that eat the berries tasting much better, but they may just be opinion. Not sure how far out a hunt like that will be but I have slowly started doing research. Attached the photo of a nice looking colored bear I came across last year. By the time I got my camera out he had almost disappeared. Look close in the top left and you might be able to pick him out. Getting one like that would be a nice warm up for the NW Brown/Grizzley Bear :D . Thanks for the offer and maybe sometime I will have to ask for some advice.

If you guys are interested in outfitted hunts for bears or lions I have THE outfitter for the job. No bait though... all hound hunting.

Everyone gets a bear. For another grand he'll sell you a guaranteed bear hunt which means if you don't get a shot at a mature bear you get your money back. The hunt is no different than the regular hunt. He has never had to issue a refund. This year up to last week they took 17 lions. One hunter didn't get a cat. Last year.... 20 lions! The guys is a houndsman to the bone. No outfitted elk or deer.... just bears, lions, & bobcats. Let me know if you're interested. It's in Idaho.

I'm kind of along with the masses, but with 2 young kids, my 3 year old a boy, who already loves to be in the woods with me, a lot of these will be with him, so I've got a while before I even attempt some, but what I have written now is, and not in this particular order,

Alaskan Bull Moose
Idaho Mountain Lion
Alaskan Brown
ND Bighorn (Not ever gonna happen, only 5 licenses per year granted)
KS Pronghorn (possibly in '15)
Canadian Caribou
CO Elk (working on it currently)
WA, OR, & MT Elk
Archery only for all of them.

A smart thing to have on your list. I hope to get enough memories stored away that I don't run out of things to think about when all I can do is sit in one place to hunt. But I hope I can still get to a half decent elk stand when that time comes.

One of the memories I plan on making is the image in my mind of a big bull moose walking stiff legged toward me rocking his giant palms back and forth and then my arrow hitting it's mark and burying deep. And two years of moose meat in the freezer.

I will take this one more higher, a grand slam all in one year. my buddy thinks im nuts... but with my schedule I would barely have to take any vacation. hit florida and texas in april. Minnesota and south Dakota in may. this will happen after I get my first bull elk. bighorn sheep is high on the list, but I would have no one to go with....
