Got Weasels?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 03 24, 2014 •  [Post 1]

In your adventures into the elk woods, you may run into any or all of these members of the weasel family. Can you name them?

#8 is an ermine. Had one stand on the toe of my boot high above Crested Butte on a bow hunt in the '80s.

What a reminder, thanks for the thread. Saw a pine martin in CO 2 years ago. Being from WI it was the first and probably the last I'll ever see. I told the guys in camp (pretty excited) and they just kinda went "huhh". Funny what people can get out of a hunting trip.

Ive trapped them all except 3,4,5, and 6. Number 5 is on my bucket list! Someday I will have them all.

my understanding is that "ermine" is just what you call a winter coated weasel. is this correct? during the two days of the late arch elk hunt i got last year, before work interfered, i was laying on the ground and had a white weasel, which i call an ermine, run up to within just a couple feet from my face, hang out for a min, then dart off. didnt seem like he ever knew i was there. pretty neat little creatures, and quite prevalent in my area. one of those things that i think would be really cool to have one mounted, but i get a kick out of seeing them and think it would just be a shame to kill one for no better reason than a mount.

phantom have you ever run into a fisher? i havent, and for all i know we dont have them here on the east side of the mountains, but id like to hear if anyone has seen them over here. i have run into a wolverine though, and according to the wdfw we dont have wolverines around here, but the wdfw doesnt always know what theyre talking about, and they dont always talk about what they know.
