Painted my new Rifle

Postby LckyTylr » 04 21, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Wifey bought me a Lower Receiver for an AR-15 for Christmas. I have been acquiring parts for it since. I can never leave "good enough" alone, I always have to personalize my toys.

I'd say, with stencil cutting, rifle prep, masking and actual painting, about 15 hours spread out over a few weeks. I'd put both of my young children to bed and then cut stencils while I watched TV with my Wife. Same thing for masking and rifle prep.

My last rifle paint job probably took my 3 times that amount of time, WAY more stencil cutting and WAY more application and re-application time.

Thanks everyone, one of these days I'm going to buy an old oven so I can start painting with the Cerakote. So far, I have only been using rattle can AlumaHyde II from Brownells, but I get the feeling that there's got to be a product out there that will give me a better finish, better lines and a stronger surface.

UDPMS Upper and Lower
DPMS Lower Parts Kit (so a cheap factory-style trigger)
Yankee Hill Machine Foreend
Can't-remember-name Butt Stock (cheap)
Can't-remember-name Bolt and Bolt Carrier (cheap)
Nikon M-223 Scope Mount
Vortex Diamondback 4-12 Scope (again . . . Cheap)
Odinworks 18" Barrel
Cheap Federal factory ammo

This is the first trip to the range. Zero mis-feeds, functioned perfectly and shot well for not doing any load development and shooting out the back of my truck.pdate

Had to be further than that, didnt you know 98% of people on hunting forums shoot dime size groups at 800 yards with factory ammo?

Ha, you guys are hilarious!!! Only 100 yards, probably about the limitation of what I'm able to shoot, or close to it. I think, with hand loads, I can get that 3rd (lower) shot to group with the upper two . . . if I can reach that point, i'll be one happy camper.

:-)

I do NOT claim to be a long range shooter . . . I'm trying to get my feet wet in that arena, but it's an expensive undertaking.

Not to mention, this is a AR . . . not overly notorious as a long range shooter. That's NOT to say that an AR platform is not capable of long range, Lord help me, I don't want to start that argument, but this is a very budget-minded coyote gun, not a tack-driving competition bench rest beauty.

I hear you, it was well-received.

I'm a forum member on Long Range Hunting Forums . . . I'm baffled by some of the BS that gets passed around on that forum by people shooting fly eyeballs at 800 yards with a factory rig and quality bedding.
