What did you just step in?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 06 03, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Here are a handfull of trail bombs you may encounter during your elk woods adventures. Can you name which animals they came from? I will tell you that there are "offerings" from a mountain lion, moose, wolf, brown bear, bobcat, coyote, black bear, and elk pictured. We'll do tracks after this thread runs for a bit ;)

From #1 to #8, who provided these scat piles for our viewing enjoyment?

I going to go with elk on #5. Based on sized, texture, freshness, and the word elk at the bottom of the photo :o I working on the rest. It would have been easier if you had just left the labels on as in five, I may even have gotten some right. :D

Not positive about this, but I've heard that they roll and smoke the dry ones in WA/CO to determine their origin ;)

Gypsum was about as close as you can get without being perfect. Anybody else care to offer their optical poop analysis :D

Brown bear, mt lion, black bear, coyote, elk, moose, wolf, bob cat

The bears could go either way as well as the cats IMHO.

some more scoop on poop, or more crap about cr@&
what an animal has been eating makes a big difference in the look and texture.
Both cat species tend to scratch over their droppings often with overhanging cover, where canines like to crap in the open
Raccoon and bears tend to often drop on a trail , or an overlook, maybe they like the view when they squat :o
Cats are pickier eaters than canines. Canines will gobble up hair, hide and fowl meats, cats will avoid it. Same with bones , while cats will eat hair, scales and bone, not as much as canines, canines will also eat more vegetation than cats. Ive seen wolf, coyote and fox dropping solid with seeds from berries

When the crickets and grasshoppers are thick until a hard freeze expect them to be eaten by about everything, canines, omnivores and felines

RJ: Where did you get your information on what the source of the feces is? I am surprised the cat left its scat without covering it up.

We have discovered through years of study that cats don't cover it when it's in the corner of your garage...so that pics must be from phantoms garage.

Grabbed the pics from a site or two on the web. Can't recall the author(s) of the photos; didn't save the sites to my favorites.

I believe you are correct about it being bear manure.

Yes sir, not much else to eat in the spring for Yogi besides succulent grass shoots.
