Scat Question

Postby idahoghost » 07 22, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Found this yesterday, near two beds. GPS is almost 5 inches long. Found two large piles and some bear scat about twenty feet away. Thoughts?

Wow, somebody was bound up  Do you have brown bear in the area you're scouting? If not, I'd say just a very large offering of black bear poop. I'm surprised it's not darker with berries this time of year though.

Found the Black Bear scat twenty yards from this, almost black and with berries. Totally different than this. Two beds, next to this. No griz that I know of or have heard of in this area.

Bigfoot was my next choice. I still think it's a big old bear pile.

ive seen bear piles that big, even black bear piles. odd tho its so grassy. doesnt look all that old in the pic, all the fresh bear crap right now is berried out. the service berries are going strong here right now. jumped one bear off a service berry bush at like 15-20 yards couple days ago. damn vermin

It still could be a wild or lost horse.
I found the the carcass of a horse with a halter last year, also rescued a lost horseman where a horse should have never been two years ago.
While running hounds in coastal Oregon years back the fellow I was running with said there was a wild horse in the area that had been there for at least 20 years , We saw it three times that weekend .

Hmm, not sure about your scat pic sir. I have seen brown bear scat look similar to what you took a picture of which is why I mentioned it. Here's an example of some early season (not snacking on the berries yet) Grizz scat as a comparison. I do agree with some of the others that the "clumping" of your pic does resemble horse/mule poop but if you say there are no horses in that area (no trails, etc.) and you're reasonably sure there are no wild horses there, it may very well be brown bear or perhaps, a black bear trying to make a statement ;). Keep us posted on what you ultimately see in the area.
