it would appear i am going Pronghorn hunting!!

Postby pointysticks » 07 30, 2014 •  [Post 1]

archery.

South Dakota!! i've never even put a pronghorn on my bucket list. maybe more of a distance/access problem than anything else.

but i just got an invite!! share a drive over there and hunt 20,000 acres of rarely hunted land! egads!! south dakota is pretty inexpensive as far as tags go. it will be a bruiser drive tho.

probably try the decoy thing. and the waterhole thing.

the only thing to derail this trip is my wife. haha..i dont like spending money i dont have..so fingers crossed!

Where you going to be hunting?

Don't be afraid to try spot and stalk. My favorite way to hunt them.

Bring leather gloves and get a set of kneepads that have a hard plastic outer cover. You will quickly learn about prickly pear cactus.

Antelope are fun to hunt, dont expect your first second third forth,....stalks to work out.
Thats the fun of antelope, lots of them , lots of chances unless your looking for a book animal.
gotta love the west side of SODAK

the landowner said the goats are everywhere. nobody hunts them. the family occasionally will stick a rifle out and blast a meat goat..but that is it.

she said they are actually becoming a problem. the guy taking me is stoked he found a partner. are you kidding me? i am the stoked one..

i hope to use my ground blind..but i really want to shoot one from behind a montana decoy..i have a pronghorn one around here somewhere.

http://shop.bethedecoy.com I have heard many people are very successful using these be the decoy, decoys. It is a lot of crawling on all 4s but worth it. Don't wear this during rifle season.

Good luck! You'll have to give u the end of Sept. or go in early Oct. if you want to decoy. It doesn't work until they start rutting hard which, unfortunately, is at the same time the elk rut. Find one where the stalk is doable. It took me awhile to quit wasting my time on them in "bad" places for a stalk.
