Passing the time

Postby MTLongdraw » 01 12, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I have a honey DO IT NOW LIST a mile long but I want to know what other websites you all use to help fine tune your skills, buy gear, and prepare for the upcoming elk season. These are a few I read. bowsite (occasionally) rokslide, acmemapper, camofire. Do you guys pass the time with any other worthy ones? Lame post, but I just wanted to try out my new computer before I get it bogged down with hunting literature, waypoints, and pictures :D

Alaska Outdoors Directory. Awesome website. Like Bowsite I go there to learn but also just to have fun visiting friends.

If it's about next years hunt and I want to get down to business it's CalTopo. Grill those maps!!!!! http://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=43.32152 ... o=r&n=0.25

Hell Longdraw... you should be thinking about hiking. You guys who live in elk country have no idea how much the rest of us would kill to live near where we hunt and be able to go there. Have you ever thought about buying a pair of snowshoes or cross country skis?

Bushcraft USA.

kinda over the top. folks just climb into the wilderness to whittle sticks and start fires to heat tea.

i am not a bushcrafter, but some of the tools and tricks really translate over to hunting well. most of them appear to be Trad shooters, and the compound guys are pretty silent. i like how all of their gear seems to be the opposite of "tactical". not many black knifes, black rifles..molle straps, etc.

not a good place to visit if you have a knife addiction. those guys are a bunch of enablers.

I spend a bit of time on Hunt Washington and the Western Forum on Archery Talk for hunting forums. I also spend some time on a vintage trailer restoration forum as I'm currently rebuilding an old trailer (with one in the chute after the first one is done). Spend most of my on-line elk talk time here though, checking in at least once a day to make sure the local hooligans are minding their P's and Q's

Passing the time

Hunting Related:

Rokslide and Archerytalk

Non-hunting related:

Expedition Portal: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/ - great site for vehicle outfitting / organization. Vehicle based expeditions / overland travel, expedition / vehicle based camping gear

Garage Journal: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/ - great site for garage/shop/basement organization, tool reviews, workbench builds, storage ideas - Too many ideas, too little time and $$$ (let's be honest - we all need some good ideas for storing all that hunting gear)

Adventure Rider - Ride Reports: http://advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2, GPS Forum: http://advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=37 - I don't even own a motorcycle but love the ride reports section and the GPS section linked here.

I think Rokslide is getting weird. It's ALL about the gear and there are clear lines on who and what products the loyalties lie with.
