Idaho fish and game screw up

Postby Lefty » 06 01, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Wha -hoo
A week back I checked all out licenses for Idaho once in a lifetime moose. None of us drew. But today I got my bull tag,..
But now the dilemma. Do I kill any bull with my bow or kill the Boone and Crockett with a rifle. My wife reminded me the season starts the end of August
well Im leaning hard archery only until the last couple weekends

Awesome Lefty... congrats! If I remember right, the tag areas that start in August run through the middle of November? Plenty of time (if you have the time to put into it) to try for your bull with stick and string and have the boomstick backup if you're unable to get a bow shot. That's a great problem to have! :D

Here's a little guy from up in the panhandle. His big brother is calling your name!

Congrats on the tag Lefty! Not very often that the screw up works in your favor quite like this! Good luck on the bull.

Lefty,
With this new tag in your pocket, does this change your elk hunting plans, or will you be able to hunt both at the same time? In my erea we have both moose and elk,but if you have till Nov. to fill the moose tag, will you still go great guns for elk in sept./oct. if you have to hunt two separate ereas?

Yes and no. Ill still hunt elk, the moose tag isnt burning a hole in my pocket. I know there are plenty of moose and I can find some opportunities. I really would like to kill a moose with a bow,.. To me that is a big priority.

My daughter drew a moose tag two years ago in the same unit. It is also where we have bear baits the past 6 years. We know the area pretty well where the moose spend most of their time and it isnt where I plan to hunt elk. However the second biggest moose I saw during my daughters hunt was a hundred yards from where Ill be camping. I Also think I (we ) know where the bigger bulls tend to hang out, Im not in a hurry to kill a bull moose. I know if I get desperate I can kill a moose most days with a rifle.
ill take a fair sized bull moose during my elk hunt? Yes" but only if it is fair sized, and I know I can get it out. Or get my other daughter and horse up quickly.I dont know squat about measuring moose. I do have 11 weeks

The tag will change my summer. I will spend some time scouting a basin that would be an easy horse pack for elk and moose .
Ive never used all of my five personal days at work. I suspect I might use them this year. I just changed schools, My Principal has already requested " moose balls( Hawaiian meat balls)

dang I hope I can sleep tonight

Congrats, that's a fun tag. My experience was their rut was about 1 week after elk. I think my first call in was mid September and they were good grunting into mid October pretty good.

You're not going to screw up this year. Is the old switchback going to notch a moose tag this year or are you looking at a different boat?

Switchback will do it,.. unless,.. unless Just got a new string put on the re curve Herters bow I bought 43 years ago. If I can draw it comfortably I may (may) use that.
