This weeks trip into wolf country and the unknown Yellowstow

Postby Lefty » 06 28, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Camped in the Targhee National Forest a short visit to Flagg Ranch John D Rockefeller Memorial, Winiger Wilderness and Yellowstone
Even checked out BSA Camp Loll.

My wife saw a wolf about 6 miles from this track, Just 20 yards off the road. Wolf track everywhere.
We hiked the Beckler River Cutoff. I wonder if we were the only people to hike part of the trail this year.

We only saw one bull elk
Get your permits!. We drove down to Flagg Ranch. No really knowing what to expect. Each of the back country ( drive your car into them with your own private bathroom, way too nice to call an outhouse) campsites, all with nice tents set up and obviously no campers cars or indication someone other than the occupied sign at the sites.
I thought I would stop and ask a ranger as we entered the tourist area of Rockefeller Memorial a few questions,. He was too busy writing a ticket t some mother for a law he wasnt sure existed.
Bathroom bag ,.. check
Invasive species sticker, check
Float permit,.. check
Float permit,.. check,.. just checking
Life Jackets,.. check
Wyoming boat licenses,.. check
Yellowstone boat tag,....... well even if your not in Yellowstone you might need one

We did come across a Yellowstone ranger, a retired fellow from Montana told us to go hike with out the daily fee or park entry,.. he did say we wouldnt see anyone,.. he was right not even a vehicle at the trail head

Big elk deserve big meat poles, we must have seen over 30 bear hang poles and 50 bear boxes. They were everywhere

Great pics Lefty. Thanks for sharing. For those of us that live away from mountain country, we can only dream of this until September :D

You need to swing through the Bighorns for a scenic break ,.. and some of the Wyoming deserts,.. Just so the kids will stop complaining about driving in South Dakota

I learned to appreciate the west, deserts grasslands and mountains before I moved out here. While it was tough to leave family, friends and lakes.
Saturday Sunday and yesterday we broke record temperatures 100,101, 102, The heat is more tolerable at 9000 feet

check and check! taking the boys and the wife, this time, back out to the big horns again in august. the snow at 8600 in late may stopped us from being able to hike too far. this time we are going to bivy up in cloud peak wilderness area. beauty is, it was only 13 hours from house to camp, 11 hours to buffalo......
