Hunting Sayings (adages)

Postby Rangerz » 07 06, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Anybody have any they would like to share?

Common one that I use - "Aim small, miss small"

Another one I like - "Rest before you crest"

"You can't eat antlers anyway" said the guy who can't find a bull.

Maybe... but elk sure tastes a little better when you're looking at some on the wall right.

And of course... "Shoot on the first day what you'd shoot on the last" True dat!

They don't get big by being stupid.

"Hunters hunt". There's plenty of time for camping in the summer.

"Let's see if anybody is home". Almost always said before a locator bugle.

"You got everything?" Always check gear after a stop in the elk woods; many a grunt tube has had to be retrieved.

"Can you skin Griz pilgrim"?

"If you get a chance, put a second arrow in him".

Every time someone new hunts with me I tell then the same things. So I guess it is my adage

"Be early or be on time"
"The sun, doesn't wait for me, and I wont wait for you"
"The geese wont wait, and I wont either.

"Elk are where you find them"
"Work hard: hunt hard"

Fox Valley, cracked me up  That one is universal.

Find some tracks, follow them to the end. Your animal will be standing in them.

When they're "Red", they're "Ready"

Refers to putting venison in the freezer.

I have one that I'm sure nobody has ever heard. I had so many hunters stagger into camp worn down to a nub because all day long they took the path of least resistance. They'd come to a really thick spot or a rock slide and slip effortlessly below it instead of pumping uphill a bit to cross above. I've had a few get back really REALLY late saying they didn't know if they were going to make it.

So I would tell them this: While you are out there making your way through elk country, unless you have a reason to drop keep saying to yourself "Gain or maintain". As they'd walk out of camp I'd look at them and smile and say "Remember, gain or maintain". Lots of them came back saying man those 3 words sure made a difference in my day.

One dude from Michigan who I'll never forget said he repeated it every step of the day. The day before he kept taking the low road and ended up at the gates of Hell.

Side note: I guess it's different if you camp in the bottom.... which I rarely do unless I have horses.
