Meet Gus. Two year, four month old yellow dog. First night here, seems to be doing OK in the new environment.

Howd you end up with a dog that age? My parents are prone to taking in unwanted/abused animals and theyve all turned out to be awesome friendly dogs once they realize theyre somewhere that theyre wanted. You gonna teach that thing to hunt sheds?

A guy and his wife offered it to a good home as they don't have time to exercise him regularly. They're work keeps them very busy and made a joint decision to find him a home and environment better suited for the lab. Spent about two hours with them yesterday before the pup moved in. Nice dog. We'll see about shed hunting, haven't done much of before. Maybe?

Good for you and Gus! Dog rescue is a very enriching commitment. Bet you love it. Wife and I have been quite involved w Vizsla breed rescue in CO and adjoining states for over 10 years. Currently we have an adopted female and an older male foster. The more people I meet, the better I like dogs.

Not sure this new dog is gonna work out; he sleeps upside down, lol, and really gets bummed when I drain the kiddie pool so he can dry off before bedtime. He's scared to go up the stairs in our house; don't think he's ever been around stairs in a house before. Will give him some adjustment time and get him down to the Deschutes river and a few local lakes for some swimming/retrieving in the next week or so.

Oh, and he "shrunk" after he got into the water!

Just kidding, that's Larry the Whippet mix. I'm an equal opportunity dog owner.

Gus will probably follow Larry up and down stairs in the near future. A buddy's GSPs showed one of my Vizslas how to hunt cornstalks for pheasants, Fred the V copied them and had it figured out in an hour. Dogs learn from other dogs faster than from people.

Well, it appears that Gus does not particularly like elk noises. I'm listening to the sounds on the first post em up thread and he's really making some curious whining sounds and giving me the stinky eye. We'll have to work on that :D

I have a yellow lab named Tucker, 2 years old, that looks to be Gus's identical twin. Even prefers the same belly up sleeping position! If gus has the same disposition as my Tucker, you are a lucky man.

Ya, really liking him so far Jim. He's got quite the personality. The PO's didn't work him out much due to their busy schedule and after his first day here, poor Gus couldn't hardly stand his back end up the next morning I'd played with him so much.... way, way too much. I felt terrible and after taking the pup to our vet and talking to him (and getting scolded) he told me no running, ball chasing, etc., for several weeks. Told me I'd stressed his knee tendons out pretty bad.. Again, I felt horrible. He told me it would be like a human who hasn't really ever ran or worked out doing twenty 100 yard sprints; same thing/same result. I had no idea he had been that restricted on his conditioning. He's doing much, much better since Sunday morning and is walking just fine now and following me everywhere in the yard, although still a bit stiff. He came from a home that was a rambler and I suspect he's really never seen stairs and is afraid of ours inside our two story. Although carpeted, he whines and refuses to go up more than a few stairs at a time before slinking back down. Patience will fix that I'm sure; not gonna force him up the stairs as that will reinforce that they're scary. He'll figure it out. Gonna isolate him from the little dogs each day and work on some training. He can sit, stay, and shake hands but with his energy level and being such a horse, I've gotta get him trained up. RJ
