Big Red and Good Weather

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 05 22, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Finally, a few nice days in a row has hit the wet side of WA state. Big red has been spiffed up and gets to rumble into work tomorrow :).

Looks like you could strap some elk quarters onto the roof pretty easy, would make a damn fine hunting rig

Absolutely! And what about strapping a nice bloody head and some antlers to the grille? A coon tail tied to the radio antenna would be nostalgic too.

RJ: I remember another fellow that could not take his car out in the rain. He got that fixed by removing the windshield and putting it back with a good adhesive. That may be all it take to make your Chevy more waterproof. The other one I was referring to was a Pontiac if I remember correctly. It probably does not matter. If replacing a leaky window that does not fix yours you could try asphalt shingles.

When we lived in Gold Beach, on the southern Oregon coast, we had 100+ mph winds every winter. To keep shingles on the roofs or our homes, everyone put extra Blackjack on each one. I started to tell RJ about this trick so he could drive his car again in the rain, but realized talking about 100 mph winds was useless information. It is kinda like telling the ugliest girl in school how to avoid being hit on by the team quarterback.

All joking aside; Big Red is a very attractive car. You can be very proud of it.

Dang. I was already making sketches for removing the trunk lid, and cutting out the back enough, with a torch to insert a red painted wood board pickup style box, including a reinforced wood board tailgate, attached by strong hardware store hinges and bungee cords. The rear tires would be replaced with some of the best salvage yard mud grippers we can find, And we would have a side mount spare tire. No special specs on the spare. It just has to fit and hold air between fill ups.

Does big red " go" or just look pretty?

A rancher friend has the same car,.. in a silver gray.
Guaranteed Sunday morning it will be in the church parking lot.

If I remember the stock 454 Chev produced 390 HP when it came out in 1970. When the emissions regulations came along the power dropped off to 270HP. With upgrades the power can go way up. Also claims by armchair experts have put even the stock power well into the stratosphere. It is interesting that we are now seeing small four and six cylinder engines that offer more power than these older heavy engines produced and at a far lower weight.
These older beauties are fun and a great reminder of how things were in our younger years.

Before my brother passed he had completed most of the mechanical on a 69 Mustang GT. The car was a mover. In the 25 years he owned it I was the only other one who ever drove it. Running on a highway at 60 i broke the tires loose, a bit of rightwingin- fishtailing to 120, let-off-the-gas and it chirped to 130.
When he passed in his will, his son was not to get the car until he was 28 ( 4 more years).

Building a car had been on my bucket list, but after his death I lost interest. I'll just keep my wifes 47 Willie going 8-)

Its amazing what some of those little cars do. A neighbor( he is clergy) has a Cooper. That little car felt good as it climbed in speed

I do not have a vintage car, but I had a 71 Buick Skylark GS. After the family started growing I traded it off for a station wagon. It was the worst trade I ever made. My neighbor had a 69 Chevrolet Malibu SS. He traded it for a Datsun. As far as I am concerned that was as bad a deal as my trade. I don't need a vintage car, but RJ's is fun to look at and it is always fun to harangue him. That is about as much excitement as I need.

Remember always, there is no replacement for "displacement". Red's 454 is bored .30 over, has a beefy cam, Eidelbrock intake, 750 Holley, shift kit in the tranny, and Yukon locker in her rear end. The Subarus, Hondas, and most of the and other fart cars skirk away sheepishly at all stop light encounters ;). Yep, the new 38 speed Challengers, Roush Mustangs, Camaros, etc are faster in the greater scheme of things but, they're a dime a dozen and....they're new, not classic. They'll never be cool ;-)

I suppose a few of the new cars will survive to become classics. Big Red is already a classic.

This has no bearing on Red, but I saw a couple of funny videos awhile back. An older lady (grandma) in a Tesla went to the track and faced off against a Hellcat if I remember correctly. Grandma smoked the Hellcat easily. I think everyone guessed it was a setup from the beginning but it was funny.
There has been a couple of spinoffs of the Jeff Gordon video where he takes a magazine writer off in his cab. It is a setup from the beginning, but the writer in not in on it at all. After he get his cab on the street, a cop car pulls up behind Jeff and hits his light bar. Jeff says, "they are not going to put me back inside" and races off down an alley into this big empty lot. The writer was in for the ride of his life. All because he had written a negative article about Jeff's driving ability. I think he had a lot of respect for Jeff after that ride.
Another video has an "innocent" young lady with a new Mustang. She is some dude's blind date. Finally in the restaurant she asks if he would like to have a ride in her new car. She feigns a lack of shifting skill on the street and the dude offers to teach her. Big mistake. The young lady took him into a large empty lot too. You can guess the rest of the story. The self promoting expert driver dude was the one that got an education that day.

I think big red is bored with the garage life. I was thinking, my commute to work from colville to seattle takes me almost 7 hours. I could probably cut that down to 3 with big red. Just think of all the exercise she would get! Needs room to run! Ill adopt her and let her be the commuter car she always wanted to be.

When i was a teenager, my friends dad had a (if i remember correctly) 1970 charger r/t 440. He woke up one night to some noise, caught a couple guys trying to steal it. I spent a good deal of time in his garage eye humping that car.

Gotcha! I love doing that to classic car buffs. Although a little is lost over the internet. When in the presence of a car nut and you see a classic, get all excited and say, "There is a 64 Corvette!" knowing that it for sure is NOT a 64 Corvette. Best if you completely miss on the brand and the year. Then watch the classic car nut come unglued correcting you. Worked on my dad for about a year. Until he caught me laughing at him. The best part of this...it never gets old! Every time they fall for it, it is funny!

that sure is a beautiful machine! love the model, and color....right down my alley.

one day I will own either a chevelle SS (I guess in orange since you already have a red one :P ) or a 76' ford hi boy, factory look, in 2 tone, red and off white, with the white powder coat crawler type wheels.

my wife's uncle restores cars, and he has built a couple beautiful chevelles. I very possibly could go that route, but I love the hi boy just as much.

the last year I was working in AK, there was a guy in Ketchikan who had 2 chevelle SS's, one was dark brown and black, one was midnight blue, both were awesome, and if it was nice out, he would be bombing around in one of them, I must have been passed by him 50 times that summer

Is the backseat big enough to...you know....invite mama back there? After all, what good is a muscle car if it doesn't impress the ladies?

It still needs a trailer hitch. You could paint the trailer hitch red if it makes you feel better. And a luggage rack! Where the heck is the luggage rack? Since you are out this week, a bunch of us could easily get together and install the luggage rack and trailer hitch for you. Consider it a present!

Took Red to the JBLM Freedom Fest car show today and who woulda thunk it, she won two trophies. Was second in the Muscle Car division (against some seriously tough competition) and she won the People Choice trophy! I guess folks do like the old gal just the way she is (without a winch, luggage rack, 4WD, trailer hitch, ORV light bars, and whatever else you heathens....you know who you are.....were planning for her). :D

Congrats! You gotta feel good about that!

Just think, if we could have made those improvements, you would have taken 1st place in both.

Okay, serious question, did you bring a pair of longhorns back from Texas to mount on Red's hood?

Definitely congrats on the trophies. Don't worry about the long horns if you did not get any. You will get some great elk antlers this year. They could be mounted on the trunk deck lid and would look really cool there.

Thanks. I honestly don't know as I was walking away from the stage area when they announced it; I asked a couple of folks when I got back to my spot in the crowd and they didn't hear it either. I was gonna check after the trophy presentation but after they were done, all the engines fired up when they told us to get the heck out of the stadium NOW or we'd have to sit there while the scheduled band played for several hours..

Outstanding, congrats! Good thing it didn't rain. Imagine all that Detroit steel melting, melting, "what a world."

U wouldn't have been the first loser in muscle car division if there would have been a set of 6×6's coming out of trunk or maybe if AC pump wasn't missing!
