Camo Dipped Elk Skulls

Postby Indian Summer » 08 01, 2017 •  [Post 1]

I have a pile of euro mounts. I've always used the same beetle guy in Montana. I just have them cleaned and whitened. Over time they can get brittle and even have small pieces break off. The get a bit flaky too. If they weren't degreased enough you can see some patchy colorations where to oils come to the surface.

So this past season I decided to have my skull hydro dipped. There are several advantages. Prior to dipping the skull gets a base paint. Prior to that my guy here in Pa glues together all of the seams in the skull. He essentially makes the skull one piece. If you know anything about skulls you know they are like a puzzle made of many pieces or sections. After gluing he uses a special paint that goes on very heavy which also aids in bonding the skull together. Finally he applies the hydro dip film. That process accomplishes the same thing and when it's done the skull is very well preserved and very stable. I like a natural skull so it was a big deal for me to give the camo idea a try. But I think it came out very nice. I picked a white base color and a fairly open camo pattern. A light skull contrasts nicely with dark antlers. I'm pretty happy with it overall and might do my next one the same way. This is the first time I've used Beetle Pro here in Pa and not only did he do a fantastic job but he's also a super nice guy. His whitening job and also top notch. So what do you think???

Looks great! I like the contrast from the usual bleached skull. How long did he say the entire process took?

It is interesting and I like the bonding idea very well. I am not sure about the camo yet. That will take a little longer. Certainly it is easy to see the quality work that was done.

Great idea gluing everything together. But I prefer either white or an American Indian design.

I'm thinking about trying an oak wood grain pattern. I want to see how it looks on a deer skull first though.

I have so many natural ones it's not even funny. Deer, antelope, lions, wolf and elk upon elk. It was time for something different. Plus the preservation factor can't be matched with a plain undipped/glued skull. I just hung it on the wall tonight. It looks very nice. And I've always been a fan of natural myself. It took me 5 months to settle on the decision to hydro dip it. No regrets.
