Hunting Camp Beverage of Choice?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 29, 2017 •  [Post 1]

OK, for those of you cats who bring some "beverages" to camp for a nightcap, what are you bringing? I'm partial to a couple of icy cold barley pops upon my return to base camp, and, of course a small glass of fine bourbon (Basil Hayden, Makers Mark, Knob Creek). What are you folks partial to for an evening beverage, or, beverages? ;)

Dry camp for me. Back when I had to camp in order to hunt I didn't waste money or space for things that didn't help me hunt. I never camped with people that felt that they had to have a drink every day, it makes me feel uncomfortable because I've had too many alcoholics in my family.

Water with a water chaser. Dry camp also. Seen too many one drink nights get out of hand. I came out to hunt, not drink.

My group may have a little beer in camp but the others rarely drink it until it is time for celebration. I am not much of a drinker. I might bring a wine cooler along to celebrate if we get one. Or might not. I know, that is pretty manly, but it is basically the only alcohol I can stand to drink.

Water, Gatorade and if I feel really wild, a V8 Fusion!

I love a good drink as much as the next guy, probably more, but its strictly water for me while im in camp. If all goes well there will be celebratory drinks while im butchering. Leaving tomorrow to my deer camp. Enjoying some bourbon and beers tonight. May be a couple weeks before i get to again.

I have a few sips of Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey. We call it "Liquid Air mattress" as it helps me fall and stay asleep, smooths out the stones and sticks under the sleeping bag. Strictly after the day is done and not too much...most of the time.

LOL, you guys. Fine beverages (or even weak bourbon as IS seems to favor nowadays.... ;)...) is the stuff that elk camps are made of. No, its not about getting lit up like a long wicked candle in a vat of bear grease, but more about camp mates sharing of bit of the fine stuff they have brought as an offering for a night cap before letting the bull songs lull them to sleep (love them bull songs). I never said anything about getting toasted each evening so a hunter can't or doesn't want to get up in the morning for the mission at hand. 8-)

I am with you on the Basil Hayden, that's my go to. But I also tried some Jim Beam Black over the summer that may make it into my flask.

How in the world do you others have the energy , ability , or mentally to stay up even a few extra minutes. Last night we put our gear together for the AM and crashed. Mostly the same every hunt night.
this year I'm not even bringing a stove to camp unless my wife is along.

It's bedtime when we get back to camp.

Yea,we have a hard time staying awake even before it starts getting dark.

I'm going try something different the next two weeks.I am not suppose to drink any alcohol ( Acid Reflux), so good whiskey is out. I picked up a 6 pack of Micalobe Bock, but it is 3.2 beer( that is what they sell in super markets here) and a 6 pack of Odoole's non- alcoholic beer. Not optimum ,but it might slake my thirst.

If I'm pack hunting I might bring a few shooters of some sort of whiskey and sometimes I'll have one or two or not if too tired.. If truck camping maybe have a six pack of craft beer in the cooler. The fine stuff is left at home to celebrate when finished the hunt.

We just pack the trailer today leaven Wednesday. Well I seen captain Morgan, Windsor. Jack Daniels, fireball and beer. It's the 2nd best thing of elk hunting sitting around a fire eating a steak and having a drink or 2.

Didn't I just read a while back about how to stay in bed at night and pee in a bottle???? No wonder you are up half the night, self inflicted wounds

Not a chance for me, never have touched the stuff and never will. I've seen way to many lives/families ruined by "just one"

So, when I get back to camp it is water, Gatorade, and the best of all....chocolate milk :D ... besides, I'm with lefty, I don't have the energy at night to even turn on a stove. The last few years it has been sub sandwiches at night and straight to bed.

Water for me. Saw a guy drinking a bud light tall boy at his spike camp 5 miles from the trailhead last week. We all had a good chuckle afterward. There are a lot of things I would like to pack in 5 miles for comfort, but a bud light is not one of them.

Now another story.
I was asked to come on a Boundary Waters canoe trip in Northern Mn. My main job was to pack a canoe and the one fellows sons gear and sort of be the guide,
Another fellow was loading 2 cases of bottled beer in a canoe .
I started by asking what was gong to happen to the bottles. He seemed insistent that the beer was important. I told him the first portage was 400 yards. If he carried the beer up to the truck and back I would carry it over the first portage. About 2/3 of the way to the truck he walked to the truck, backed up, picked up the case then backed to the water for the 2nd case.

I havent touched a drop in 30 years. I use to enjoy good beer and at one time worked for the brewmasters at Hauenstein and Schells and got lots of good beer cheap. I wont hold it against any man after a hard day to put his feet up and lay back
